Panel Discussion: Alternative Knowledge Practices and the Politics of Urban Transformation

Date & Time: Thursday, 2 October 2025, 16:0017:00 (CET) Location: STS Seminar Room, Universittsstrae 7 (Staircase II, 6th floor), 1010 Vienna Online: Join via Zoom: https://univienna.zoom.us/j/66316904921?pwd=r1GDvmtYWB56idhJkFry6HQftrVvIb.1 (Meeting ID: 663 1690 4921, Passcode: 182974)

How can alternative knowledge practices reshape our cities? This public panel brings together contributors to a forthcoming special issue of Environment and Planning C: Politics and Space to explore how diverse knowledgesemerging from resistance movements, informal practices, and marginalized perspectivescontribute to the politics of urban transformation.

The discussion will engage with cases ranging from:

  • Strategies of homeless communities in Chennai,

  • Urban space-making practices of children in Chile,

  • Learning processes in Urban Living Labs in Maastricht,

  • Counter-expertise in self-organised housing groups in Vienna,

  • And citizen/community science initiatives for urban wildlife in European cities.

By focusing on urban frictionsthe tension-filled encounters where knowledges collide, resist, and transformthe panel will explore how alternative ways of knowing cities are produced, contested, and co-opted, and what this means for imagining more inclusive, just, and multispecies urban futures.

Organisers: Andrea Schikowitz (FH Wiener Neustadt) Pouya Sepehr (WSL, Zurich) Denver V. Nixon (Maastricht University) Anique Hommels (Maastricht University)
