Dear colleagues,

Consider participate in a unique opportunity for PhD students, postdocs, early-stage and established researchers in STEM and Social Science and Humanities (SSH) fields.

This Advanced Certificate Course, taking place from April 2-4, 2025, in Coimbra, Portugal (in-person with remote participation available) and additional online-only sessions in May, focuses on fostering deep interdisciplinarity in biotechnological research and innovation.

Registration and full details can be found here: https://ces.uc.pt/pt/formacao-extensao/cursos-de-formacao/2025/deep-interdisciplinarity-in-biotechnological/overview [1]

The deadline for registration is 24 March, 2025. Please see below for more details.

DEEP INTERDISCIPLINARITY IN BIOTECHNOLOGICAL RESEARCH AND INNOVATION

📅 April 2-4, 2025 (CES, Universidade de Coimbra & remote) + May 5 & 8, 2025 (remote; exact dates TBC) 📍 Room 1 + Online

Full Agenda and Registration: https://ces.uc.pt/pt/formacao-extensao/cursos-de-formacao/2025/deep-interdisciplinarity-in-biotechnological/overview [1]

In recent years, European Commission funding calls, including Horizon Europe, have increasingly emphasized the integration of social sciences and humanities (SSH) into STEM-based research and innovation projects. SSH scholars are not just "add-ons" but key contributors in shaping interdisciplinary research that tackles Europe's most pressing scientific and societal challenges.

This course brings together participants from STEM and SSH backgrounds to critically engage with interdisciplinary collaboration, using the Horizon Europe-funded BioAssembler project [2]--which develops next-generation multiplex biosensors--as a case study.

Through eight dynamic sessions, participants will:

✅ Explore real-world examples of STEM-SSH collaboration in cutting-edge biotech research ✅ Identify best practices, methods, challenges, and new approaches for interdisciplinary work ✅ Engage across disciplinary boundaries, bridging gaps between SSH and STEM perspectives ✅ Learn strategies for integrating SSH into EU R&I proposals and grant applications

This course is ideal for PhD students, postdocs, and researchers at all career stages with an interest in: 🔹 Interdisciplinary research at the SSH-STEM interface 🔹 Science, technology, and society studies (STS) 🔹 Science communication and policy 🔹 Biotechnology and emerging technologies

Participants seeking certification will have the opportunity to present their work, workshop research proposals, or discuss career pathways in this evolving field.

Please feel free to reach out to Rita Campos (ritacampos@ces.uc.pt) or Kristen Connor (kristenconnor@ces.uc.pt) if you have any questions.

Best regards,

Rita
