Postdoc position + two PhD courses at Medical Museion in Copenhagen
Dear all, Medical Museion (www.museion.ku.dk) at University of Copenhagen has a vacant postdoc position and two PhD courses in the autumn semester, which could be of interest to the EASST community 3-year Postdoc position on the project “Becoming an interdisciplinary scientist: Communicating values and valuing difference” This project is part of a theme investigating the internal ‘research culture’ of contemporary biomedicine, and the postdoc will ask how communicating the values and goals that drive research can help scientists from different backgrounds work together. The team at Medical Museion is highly interdisciplinary and aims to be a welcoming and inclusive environment – where people from academic, museum, administrative, and other backgrounds collaborate on shared projects whilst also respecting each other’s professional expertise. Read more about the project, the job and the formal requirements here PhD course Medicine in context - histories and cultures of biomedical science 02.12.2024-06.12.2024 + written assignment – 4ECTS No matter the historical period or cultural context, medical thoughts and practices are always powerful cultural and societal forces, shaping how health, disease and bodies are understood. This is no different for contemporary biomedical science and its clinical applications which seems to influence all aspects of health thinking from diagnosis of mental illness to understandings of overweight, cancer and auto-immune diseases. The course is broadly divided into two parts: The first is focused on exploring the histories of biomedicine, using a genealogical method to critically explore the why and how of its development. This part of the course examines the origins of scientific medicine, the history of laboratory science and the development of our current diagnostic frameworks and categories. The second part takes its point of departure in the wider contemporary landscape of medical thought and practice, exploring some of the fraught and complicated sites and interactions between biomedical science and society. This includes discussions of the processes of medicalization as well as diving into some of the epistemic challenges currently being raised, including criticism of RTC’s and the cycles of hypes and hopes associated with certain scientific fields such genetics, microbiome research and stem cell research. Additionally, the course will present several critical and activist perspectives on biomedicine, including feminist and disability studies perspectives. The course is taught at Medical Museion, includes the exhibitions as sites for learning and discussion and it aims is to gather students from a broad range of disciplines: both from "within" the biosciences and those studying it from social scientific and humanities perspectives. For more info and practicalities, follow the link here Creative Processes for Academic Writing 04.11.2024-12.11.2024 + assignment prior to the course. 4 ECTS Creative Processes for academic writing Whether you are at the start or towards the end of the process, your PhD dissertation is probably your biggest writing project so far. Most PhD students experience challenges over the years, such as writers’ block, problems with structure, how to address their audiences, or finding the right form for different genres (from field notes and scientific papers to monographs or conference presentations). This course will introduce PhD researchers to writing techniques that you can use to work through blocks in your thesis, write more persuasively, explore the value of creativity and play in scholarly writing, and edit more effectively. The course is based at the Medical Museion (Department of Public Health, UCPH) and led by Science communication scholar Louise Whiteley and the experienced poet and researcher Dr James Wilkes, together with invited guest speakers and course facilitators.
