Expertise, AI and Automatization

Maja Hojer Bruun, Aarhus University Dorthe Kristensen, University of Southern Denmark Francis Lee, Chalmers University of Technology Robert Evans, Cardiff University

When various types of AI systems and automated decision-making systems are introduced in different fields and organizations, often with the promise of improving efficiency or quality or lowering costs, they co-exist alongside other forms of expertise and established professional norms and values. This implies a redistribution and reconceptualization of expertise and a reconfiguration of AI systems in larger organizational and sociotechnical settings. The aim of this panel is to explore how work practices, professional identities, knowledge, skills and expertise are transformed with the implementation of AI and to examine the reverberations of these transformations across professional landscapes.

AI systems often function and arrive at decisions in ways that appear obscure, both to their users, their objects, and sometimes also their developers. AI providers typically lack insight into specific institutions and work organizations. It is also commonly recognized that AI technologies are far from flawless, and that human skills and expertise are required both to understand, complement and repair the failings of algorithmic systems. Nevertheless, fears of deskilling, job displacement and human redundancy have intensified. As new forms of decision-making and human-machine interaction emerge, are we observing a shift in certain skills or types of expertise, or the development of new concepts of expertise, such as substantial/contributory or interactional expertise?

The session will zoom in on the capabilities, practices and forms of expertise that are enacted by or expected of individual professionals, communities of practice, institutions and others when they integrate AI and digital technologies into work practices and everyday lives.
