*A PhD Position in the SFI-IRC Pathway Project “From health (il)literacy to
capability: building a dialogue on barriers to health and healthcare in
deprived contexts”University College Dublin, Ireland*

*About the role*
Applications are sought from candidates interested in pursuing a PhD in
Social Sciences (Equality Studies; Health and Society). Candidates will be
based on the main University College Dublin campus, Belfield, and will be
registered for the doctoral programme within UCD’s College of Business. The
programme of research in which the PhD candidate will engage will form part
of the SFI-IRC Pathway project ‘From health (il)literacy to capability:
building a dialogue on barriers to health and healthcare in deprived
contexts’, running title: ‘Deprived Health’.

*About ‘Deprived Health’*
This multidisciplinary research aims to contribute to the conceptual
understanding and the concrete pursuit of social and health equity. It
interrogates what socioeconomically deprived migrants and homeless people
need in order to achieve equality of opportunities in relation to health,
and it aims to illuminate pathways to provide this equality. The project
combines philosophical analysis, empirical research and social commitment:
grounded in philosophical and public health literature on social and health
justice, it engages collaboratively with migrants and homeless people as
well as with medical and administrative authorities, in order to better
understand with them the barriers to health, and to identify together
strategies to mitigate them. Cast as a multi-case study research across
three fieldwork sites (Dublin, Genova, and a third site to be defined), it
includes a first phase of ethnographic research with socio-economically
deprived migrants and homeless people and one-to-one interviews with
medical and administrative authorities in the same contexts; and a second
phase – the keystone of this research – of mediated joint dialogues
between
deprived migrants and homeless people and medical and administrative
authorities to analyse the emerged barriers and collaboratively codesign
possible mitigation strategies.

*About the Project*
The successful candidate will participate in the research fieldwork in
Dublin, data analysis and engagement activities, and will lead the
fieldwork, data analysis and the engagement activities in the third
fieldwork site (which will be collaboratively chosen, depending on the
candidate’s cultural and linguistic background). Apart from contributing to
the research fieldwork, the PhD student will be involved from the earliest
stage of the research in the conceptual development of the project.
Throughout the duration of the project, the successful candidate will be
provided with training and networking activities, which will culminate with
the composition and the defence of an original PhD dissertation. The
successful candidate will have latitude to shape their own PhD work within
the overall remit of the project.
