PhD position Inclusive Value chains for Maritime Biofuels <br> <br>Job description <br>The Biotechnology & Society group of Delft University of Technology is looking <br>for a PhD candidate for a project on inclusive value chains for maritime <br>biofuels (CLEAN SHIPPING). The shipping industry is in dire need of clean and <br>sustainable fuels. This project focusses on the major social issues in the <br>transition to inclusive biobased value chains for maritime biofuels and seeks <br>to develop new business models to overcome these issues. Reconciling the <br>targets of sustainable supply security and value creation for local producers <br>of biomass requires alignment of various actors relevant to the value chain. <br>Just distribution of risks and benefits is key in achieving this alignment. <br>The project involve case-studies for different feedstocks in Africa and <br>South-America. Relevant actors and their particular interests and perspectives <br>will be investigated through interviews and surveys. The results will be <br>translated into guidelines to set up inclusive biobased value chains. <br>The research will be conducted in close collaboration with a variety of <br>biobased industry and shipping industry partners. The project is part of a <br>Responsible Innovation project which also involves another PhD-candidate <br>focussing on sustainability assessment of biobased value chains, a postdoc <br>focussing on technical aspects (at a different TUDelft research group) and a <br>postdoc focussing on sustainable business models. A project description is <br>available upon request. <br>Intended starting date is Dec 1, 2020 <br> <br>Requirements <br> <br> * a Masters degree or near completion of Masters degree in development <br>studies, innovation studies, Science and Technology Studies, anthropology or a <br>related subject. <br> * affinity with biobased economy <br> * excellent English writing and presentation skills <br> * qualitative research skills is a pre <br> * willingness to spend time abroad <br> * willingness to work with industry <br> <br>Applied Sciences <br>The Faculty of Applied Sciences is the largest faculty of TU Delft, with <br>around 550 scientists, a support staff of 250 and 1,800 students. The faculty <br>conducts fundamental, application-oriented research and offers scientific <br>education at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels. The faculty is active <br>in the fields of Life and Health Science & Technology, Nanoscience, Chemical <br>Engineering, Radiation Science & Technology, and Applied Physics. <br> <br>The Department of Biotechnology concentrates on the multidisciplinary fields <br>of biocatalysis, metabolic engineering and fermentation technology, <br>environmental biotechnology bioprocess technology, biotechnology and society. <br> <br>The Section Biotechnology and Society (BTS) performs leading research on <br>understanding societal and sustainability aspects and translating this into <br>responsible innovation and communication of biotechnology for sustainable <br>development. The group is uniquely positioned in the Department of <br>Biotechnology and leading in (inter)national programs with academic partners, <br>industry and government.
