Medicine, Science and the Law is the official journal of the British Academy
for Forensic Sciences (BAFS)<http://www.bafs.org.uk/>. It is a peer reviewed
journal dedicated to advancing the knowledge of forensic science, forensic
medicine and law. The journal aims to inform its readers from a broad
perspective and demonstrate the interrelated nature and scope of the forensic
disciplines. Through a variety of authoritative research and practice articles
submitted from across the globe, it covers a range of topical medicolegal
issues. The journal keeps its readers informed of developments and trends
through reporting, discussing and debating current issues of importance in
forensic practice.

Responsibilities of the role include:

* Making final decisions regarding publication of all articles
submitted to the journal, based on the reviewer comments, recommendations from
a team of Speciality Editors (who manage the peer review of papers within
their discipline) and your own view of the papers

* Managing the peer review of the submissions occasionally assigned to
you to the highest ethical standards (via an online submission system -
ScholarOne Manuscripts) in accordance with SAGE policies, processes and
operational aspects

* Using your own network to grow the team of Speciality and Consulting
Editors who will be experts in forensic science, forensic medicine or law

* Working with the Speciality Editors, Consulting Editors, BAFS and
publisher (SAGE) on the strategic development of the Journal, with a
particular focus on ensuring only high quality content is accepted for
publication with an aim to further increasing the journal's Impact Factor

* Ensuring that the highest peer review standards are upheld by all
Speciality Editors

* Taking an active role in soliciting submissions and encouraging high
quality articles

* Representing the Journal as Editor-in-Chief at events and carrying
out promotional activity when possible with the support of BAFS and the
publisher

* Ensuring that enough copy is accepted for the journal to publish to
schedule

* Reviewing print issue proofs for each of the quarterly issues of the
journal

* Attending at least one Editorial Board meeting per year and BAFS
meetings upon request (including the annual AGM)

* Taking part in quarterly teleconferences with SAGE and the Board of
Speciality Editors

* Regularly providing BAFS with feedback on journal performance -
including quarterly updates - which may be written or verbal

The ideal candidate will:

* be a recognised expert or practitioner expert in either forensic
science, forensic medicine or law with a strong understanding of this
multidisciplinary field

* have strong leadership and organisational qualities and experience
of chairing meetings

* have a strong academic research or teaching background in a
recognised university or equivalent institution (please note: this experience
is strongly desired, however it is not a requirement of the role)

* have strong experience of writing for, reviewing for and/or working
on a journal in the capacity of Editor or Editorial Board member - ideally for
Medicine, Science and the Law

* be well-networked and well-voiced from any discipline within the
scope of the journal, with experience of and a passion for the ongoing growth
of this multi-disciplinary field; this should include strong links with
associations and institutions involved in different aspects of the forensic
sciences

* have a good understanding of the peer review process, as well as
peer review and publication ethics

* be organized, responsive, proactive and driven

* be an existing or previous member of BAFS or have an understanding
of BAFS as an organisation

* be able to dedicate a minimum of four hours per week to journal
responsibilities

A modest editorial remuneration is offered to help cover expenses of the role
and BAFS are seeking an initial 3 year commitment. Please note that Medicine,
Science and the Law has an in house Peer Review Associate who manages the
administrative tasks of the peer review process.

SAGE and BAFS invite expressions of interest by the 31st December 2017. Those
interested in making an application should send a brief CV (no more than three
pages) and covering letter, which includes a suggestion for a special issue
and rationale for this suggestion.

All enquiries and expressions of interest should be directed via email in the
first instance to:
