From: STS Italia Sent: Tuesday, 28 September 2021 12:47 To: STS Italia Subject: Call for Chapters (STS Italia edited book): INTERFACING BODIES AND TECHNOLOGIES
Dear colleagues,
the board of STS Italia (Assunta Viteritti, Simone Arnaldi & Stefano Crabu) is editing the book "INTERFACING BODIES AND TECHNOLOGIES. Practices, imaginaries and materiality" and would like to invite you to contribute a chapter. The book will be published in 2022. If you are interested in contributing a chapter to our book you could submit an abstract of not more than 500 words to & until November 30, 2021.
The book is a a way to celebrate Prof. Marina Maestrutti, prematurely and suddenly passed away on 22 January 2021. Marina Maestrutti, scholar in the field of Science and Technology Studies at University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and Vice President of STS Italia from 2016 to 2018, spent most of her professional career trying to exploring the unstable interconnections among subjectivity, living bodies, gender, technoscience and care.
This is our timetable:
30/11/2021 Abstracts submission 10/12/2021 Acceptance of Abstracts 30/04/2022 Full Chapters 31/05/2022 Feedback to authors 22/07/2022 Revised Chapters 28/09/2022 Manuscript to Publisher
We are looking forward to receiving your abstracts!
Best regards, Assuta Viteritti, Simone Arnaldi, Stefano Crabu (The Board of STS Italia)
Call for Chapters (also in attachment)
Interfacing bodies and technologies
Practices, imaginaries and materiality
In the context of contemporary technologically dense societies, the body is deeply configured by technoscience; no sphere of life related to bodies and bodily experience, such as birth, reproduction, sexuality, gender and ageing, is alien to technoscientific intervention. As a result, the body is no longer a stable site of normalized functions but a mutable (battle)ground in constant transformation. These modifications are fueled by emerging technoscientific fields, such as nanotechnology and robotics; (bio)technological innovations (e.g. sensory implants and prostheses); new medical devices and techniques, such as diagnostic imaging.
What are the implications of such a mutable corporeality? What analytic stance can be adopted to investigate this changeable, hybrid body? How can Science and Technology Studies explore the entanglements among bodies, scientific knowledge and technologies? How can Science and Technology Studies enlighten the way in which corporeality is materially and discursively constructed through technoscience? How corporeality and the body contribute to defining technoscience itself?
Marina Maestrutti, scholar in the field of Science and Technology Studies at University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and Vice President of STS Italia from 2016 to 2018, spent most of her professional career trying to answer these questions and exploring the unstable interconnections among subjectivity, living bodies, gender, technoscience and care. The STS Italia community was deeply saddened when Marina prematurely and suddenly passed away on 22 January 2021.
As a way to celebrate her memory and continue to explore the multidisciplinary themes so dear to her, the STS Italia board announces a book project addressing the topics that Marina Maestrutti explored during her career.
This call for chapters departs from her sensitivity to the changing boundaries of the body as a source of technoscientific imageries spanning from the present-day reality of therapeutic and non-therapeutic interventions to futuristic visions of bodily enhancements that push the relations between humans and technologies far beyond their current limits.
STS scholars are invited to join this project and submit manuscripts in, but not limited to, the following research areas:
• relationships between bodies and technologies in biomedicine;
• socio-technical imaginaries and technoscientific representations of bodies;
• technology and ageing;
• technology and disabilities;
• body interventions and body modifications (prosthetics, cosmetic surgery, etc.);
• health and technological innovation (wearable devices and health monitoring apps, healthcare software platforms, diagnostic imaging, robotics, etc.);
• biomedicalization and bodies in care practices;
• cyborgs, sex, gender and technologies;
• posthumanist discourses on the body.
Submissions and deadlines
A chapter abstract (max 500 words) should be sent to and by 30 November 2021. The criteria for acceptance are scientific quality and theoretical/empirical relevance to the topics and questions listed above. The abstracts will be reviewed and selected by a Scientific Advisory Board. Notifications of acceptance/rejection will be sent to the authors by 10 December 2021.
Full chapters should be sent to stsitalia.org@gmail.com by 30 April 2022. Manuscripts should be no longer than 6,500 words (including references). The book will be published in open access format by EUT Edizioni Università di Trieste (University of Trieste) so to be freely downloaded and widely disseminated.
If you have any questions or want to know if your idea is suitable for submission, please write to and .
