WEBINAR: Digital media, technology and the future of politics post-COVID-19 - With Micky Lee, Scott Timcke, Peter Bloom and Thomas Swann, chaired by Martin Parker

apologies for cross posting

Bristol University Press is delighted to announce their forthcoming webinar: Digital media, technology and the future of politics post-COVID-19 with Micky Lee, Scott Timcke, Peter Bloom and Thomas Swann, chaired by Martin Parker

Join us on Tuesday 28 September, 4-5pm BST for a conversation about digital technologies, how they shape the world and what the future holds.

Micky Lee, author of 'Media Technologies for Work and Play in East Asia', will look at what is means to have the first virtual Olympics and how we can use different perspectives across political economy, cultural studies and STS to examine media technologies in pop culture-rich Asian cities

Scott Timcke, author of 'Algorithms and the End of Politics', will talk about the data politics of financial technologies and what developmental options exist for African countries. He will show how Northern platforms perpetuate neocolonial tendencies in the South and exacerbate the global racial wealth gap.

Drawing from his book 'Guerrilla Democracy', Peter Bloom, will focus on public health and how the pandemic represents an opportunity for exploring revolutionary alternatives, including user-led technology, that can both address the pandemic and radically transform our social existences.

Thomas Swan will look at how we have moved from techno-optimism to techno pessimism, based on his book Anarchist Cybernetics. Internet technologies seem to be increasingly constraining us through algorithmic manipulation so how do we take back control?

The webinar will be chaired by Martin Parker, Professor of Organization Studies at the University of Bristol and editor of 'Life After COVID-19'. The panellists will answer your questions at the end of the session.

Attendees will be given a code for 50% off books by the panellists
