Roundtable on Socially Responsible Funding Policy

Hi Everyone,

Just a gentle reminder that we cordially invite all to join us in a roundtable discussing socially responsible funding policy with a special emphasis on the medical sciences. The roundtable will take place at 10:00am EST (3:00pm GMT) on Saturday November 14th, 2020. The session will be a total of 3 hours.

The COVID-19 crisis has again emphasized the importance of science for a well-functioning global society. In particular, we now turn to life sciences for answers that could influence the whole human race, from our very survival to details about the development and management of resources. Thus, responsible life science policy is of global relevance. This raises new questions, such as how best to distribute a future vaccine, or what agents can be counted as blameworthy in cases of failure. This international, online workshop brings together experts to discuss one of the many new questions prompted by the current crisis, specifically, how are we to fund pandemic science? Is this best left to each country, or are multinational standards to be preferred? What role should be played by private companies, as opposed to national funding agencies? What kinds of healthcare inequalities follow from inequalities in funding?

Speakers:

Ivor Ralph Edwards (Uppsala Monitoring Center)

Manuela Fernndez Pinto (Universidad de los Andes)

Rade Injac (Sandoz)

Sergio Sismondo (Queens University)

Jacob Stegenga (University of Cambridge)

Matthew Wallace (International Development Research Centre)

This event is hosted by Centre for Philosophy of Science, University of Geneva, the Forum for Advancing Science and Education through Philosophy, and the Carl Fredrich von Weizscker Center, University of Tbingen.
