Energy policy opportunities for PhDs/ECRs in Social Sciences & Humanities

Dear colleagues - the below opportunities for PhDs and ECRs (up to 3 years
post-graduation) may be of interest. Note that the funded opportunities
(secondments and travel bursaries) require applicants to be based at a UK
institution, but the energy policy masterclass for Social Science & Humanities
scholars is very much open to all.

Energy policy opportunities for PhDs and Early Career Researchers from the
Social Sciences & Humanities

Energy-PIECES
The
Energy-PIECES (Energy Policy Insights from
Early Career Events and Secondments) project is co-ordinated by Anglia Ruskin
University's Global Sustainability
Institute (GSI),
alongside The University of Cambridge's Centre for Science &
Policy (CSaP). It is funded by the UK Energy
Research Council's (UKERC) Whole Systems Networking
Fund, and complements
ongoing work in the EU SHAPE ENERGY project.

Energy policy secondments
We are advertising six 6-week paid energy policy secondments for Social
Sciences & Humanities PhD and early-career researchers. Eligibility includes
being UK-based and within 3-years of PhD graduation (or a current PhD
researcher). The deadline for applications is Friday 16 November 2018, and the
secondments are set to take place during January-March 2018. Detailed guidance
on the secondment application process, setup, and foci, can be found
here.

Our secondments are:

Secondment #1: 'Options for a new model of energy industry governance'
(UK Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy
[BEIS])

Secondment #2: 'The social dimensions of moving away from gas cookers
and hobs' OR 'How can transition research inform heat decarbonisation policy?'
(UK Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy
[BEIS])

Secondment #3: 'The role of public energy advice in transitioning
towards a low carbon, decentralised energy system with lower levels of fuel
poverty' (Energy Saving Trust)

Secondment #4: 'How local authorities can support and promote
citizens' involvement in energy systems' (Energy
Cities)

Secondment #5: 'Exploring the socio-economic impact of nationally
significant energy infrastructure projects' (EDF
Energy)

Secondment #6: 'Achieving inclusive rural electrification: policy and
regulatory options for improving the effectiveness of mini-grids in developing
countries' (Practical Action)

Masterclass:
In partnership with the Royal Geographical Society's Energy Geographies
Research Group, the GSI and CSaP are
hosting a free energy policy masterclass on Monday 10 December (0930-1700,
followed by networking drinks) in Cambridge. The masterclass will be
interactive and put the spotlight on the Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH)
as an energy policy evidence base, which are too often overlooked in favour of
more technical energy research disciplines.

A number of travel and accommodation bursaries are available for UK-based
attendees; the deadline for applications is also 16 November 2018. We
anticipate the event to be popular and so encourage applying for the bursaries
and/or registering for a place early. More details (including registration
form and preliminary programme) available
here.
