CFP – MAEC 2025 Panel on Algorithmic Cultures in Healthcare
Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to invite submissions for our panel, Bridging the Divide: Connecting Humans and Technology in Algorithmic Cultures, at the upcoming Medical Anthropology Europe Conference (MAEC) 2025, to be held from September 16-19, 2025, in Vienna, Austria. As health technologies—from wearable sensors and clinical decision-support algorithms to predictive AI—continue to reshape contemporary medicine, it is crucial to critically examine their epistemologies, promises, and consequences. This panel adopts a medical anthropological perspective to explore how algorithmic cultures transform knowledge production, reconfigure expertise, and redefine health and the body. We welcome contributions that investigate how AI and data-driven technologies co-produce new conditions of healthcare while introducing novel uncertainties, ethical dilemmas, and inequalities. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Ethnographic studies of AI-driven diagnostic or therapeutic technologies * Valuation practices and ethics of data-driven health interventions * Reconfigurations of expertise and organizational negotiations * Algorithmic concepts of normality and abnormality * AI-human collaboration in clinical decision-making and documentation * Healthcare organizations' strategies for navigating algorithmic interventions We encourage submissions that are ethnographically grounded and methodologically innovative, engaging with the cultural, political, and economic dimensions shaping algorithmic medicine. By bringing together diverse voices from within and beyond academia, this panel aims to foster critical and constructive dialogue on how humans and technologies co-constitute the future of healthcare. Submission Details: * Abstract Submission Deadline: April 15, 2025 * Submission Portal: MAEC 2025 Call for Papers * Conference Dates: September 16-19, 2025 * For any inquiries, please feel free to reach out to us at guozongtian@uva.nl.
