S2C2 Meeting Series: Social Studies of Chemicals and Chemistry in Transformation

                Dear colleagues,

I'd like to heartly invite you tojoin thevirtual S_2 C_2 Meeting Series:
Social Studies of Chemicals and Chemistry in Transformation.

S_2 C_2 is an emerging global network of science and technology studies
scholars interested in the study of chemicals and chemistry. The meeting
series aims at building and stabilizing the network. Network members put
up their ongoing work for discussion. Beyond the individual
presentations, there will also be time for mutual encounters.

Attached, you can find the program for the upcoming winter and summer term.

We will kick off the Meeting Series on 30 October 2024, 18:00 (Berlin
(CET)) with a brief presentation by Kasper Ampe (Ghent University) on
‘socio-technical integration research with chemical engineers’.

As this is the first meeting of the network, we will dedicate the second
half of the session for discussions around the composition of the
network and meetings.

*Presenter & abstract*

Kasper Ampe is postdoctoral researcher in the Centre for Sustainability
Studies at the department of Political Sciences of Ghent University.

His presentation focuses on socio-technical integration research with
chemical engineers. Instead of imposing specific socio-technical issues
to the engineers, the Socio-Technical Integration Research (STIR)
approach was employed to explore how engineers make decisions and
perceive their roles. The findings reveal that engineers tend to view
their responsibilities in line with broader, mainstream narratives,
which are often narrow in scope. While true socio-technical integration
calls for a radical rethinking of research practices, these results
suggest significant progress is still needed to achieve this goal.

All best,

Patrick Bieler
