Medicine and Power Critique: Assessing the Potential of Science, Technology,
and Medicine Studies

Chairs: Tamara Schwertel & Renate Baumgartner

This panel seeks to explore the current positioning and potential of Science,
Technology, and Medicine Studies (STMS). Particularly within medical
sociology, the medical field has been extensively researched, experiencing
significant transformations over the past decades. Critical approaches,
prominent in the last century through social science and sociology of
knowledge research, have gradually receded into the background. In many cases,
medical sociology has increasingly aligned itself as an auxiliary discipline
to medicine, resulting in depoliticization and diminished emphasis on
critique. This panel aims to explore the role of medicine as a research field
within the STS framework.

In this context, scholars such as Adele E. Clarke have called for the
development of a feminist and power-critical agenda within ST(M)S. These
critical approaches have given rise to methods like situational analysis and
theoretical concepts such as medicalization.

The panel invites contributions addressing the following questions:

Ø What might STMS look like, and what role can critique play in knowledge
production in this field?

Ø How is the relationship between STS and medicine evolving?

Ø What current critical studies, approaches, and concepts are emerging in
STMS?

Contributions may focus on historical developments, current studies, or
methodological innovations in the field. Please submit your
200-words-abstracts and a small bio by October 31 to
tamara.schwertel@uk-koeln.de and
r.baumgartner@vu.nl
