EASST2022 Panel 053. DATA ANALYTICS IN SCIENCE – WHAT IS AT STAKE?

                Dear colleagues,

we are inviting papers to our panel titled =93Data Analytics in Science =96=
 What is at stake?=
=94 at the EASST 2022 Conference in Madrid 6-9 July 2022. The deadline is t=
he 1st of February and you can submit an abstract through the link: https:/=
/easst2022.org/openpanel.asp

Convenors: Anne K. Kr=FCger (Berlin Brandenburg Academy of Science and Huma=
nities) and Sabrina Petersohn (German Centre for Higher Education Research =
and Science Studies)

Abstract:
The datafication of science and its algorithmic assessment are accelerating=
 at a rapid pace. The
digitization of academic publishing jointly with technological developments=
 such as greatly increased
storage and computing capacities as well as advanced data harvesting techni=
ques have opened up an
abundance of new data sources that are referred to as information about res=
earch =93output=94, =93impact=94,
and =93performance=94. Besides publications and their citations, data about=
 related research
organizations, grants, patents, and clinical trials as well as about views,=
 clicks, downloads, or
mentions on social media platforms are increasingly becoming available. Per=
sistent identifiers such
as the DOI for publications, the ORCiD for authors, or the ROR for organiza=
tions moreover
contribute to interrelating these data through unambiguously identifying re=
search output and
researchers.
This constant growth of data has triggered an unprecedented development of =
open and commercial
databases and data analytics tools and devices turning the provision of res=
earch information and
evaluation into =93a crowded marketplace=94 (de Rijcke & Rushforth 2015). P=
rivate companies and
community-based initiatives constantly generate new ways for extracting and=
 assessing data while
arguing for the benefits of the =93retrievability=94, =93traceability=94, a=
nd =93accountability=94 of research and
researchers. The increasing and rather uncontrolled aggregation and interre=
lation of data about
researchers and their work, however, raises questions on the ways and conse=
quences of the
sociomaterial interplay between technology, its providers, and its users an=
d the political economy
behind it: How and by whom are these data and the respective devices provid=
ed and put into use?
And how do they affect the understanding and (e)valuation of science?

The panel invites contributions that (1) address how these data and data an=
alytics affect research and
researchers, (2) discuss data politics regarding access, ownership, and que=
stions of data protection,
(3) investigate how the rationales and functionalities of data analytics in=
fluence evaluation practices,
or (4) focus on the marketization and assetization of data on research and =
researchers within and
beyond academia.

Key words:
data analytics, research evaluation, critical data studies

Best wishes

Sabrina Petersohn
