STS PhD studentship, University of Edinburgh

                Dear colleagues,

Im just writing to make you aware of anSTS/medical sociology PhD studentship
I'm advertising at Edinburgh: Why (not) participate? An international
comparative study of people with MNDs experiences of, and perspectives on,
participating in research. Sarah Cunningham-Burley will be the second
supervisor. The studentship includes: 3 years of UKRI-level stipend (currently
14, 777), UK/EU fees, and 5, 000 p.a. of consumables/travel.

This project forms part of a PhD studentship competition across the biomedical
and social sciences, being run by the Euan MacDonald Centre for Motor Neurone
Disease (EMC). Currently, there are seven projects advertised and one
(possibly two) projects will be funded. The best student is chosen by the EMC
on the basis of application, interview and references. The EMC are seeking to
develop their social science portfolio, so a strong candidate with an MA/MSc
(or similar) in a relevant social science discipline would be competitive. It
is essential that prospective students contact me first to discuss their ideas
for this PhD project.

Any appointed student will be linked with the EMC, and based in our new
Wellcome Trust-supported Centre for Biomedicine, Self and Society.
Administratively situated within Edinburgh Medical School, the Centre brings
together a range of scholars from across the University of Edinburgh working
in the social sciences and medical humanities. By autumn 2019 the Centre will
comprise 18 members of academic staff with several PhD students, and dedicated
administrative and public engagement support. The Centre is currently based in
Buccleuch Place, adjacent to the majority of social science departments within
Edinburgh, and will ultimately be sited within the Edinburgh Futures Institute
(currently being built).

More detail about the studentship competition can be found here:

The deadline for applications is 7th January 2019.

Interviews will be held in Edinburgh most likely at the end of January.

I would really appreciate it if you could please disseminate this message to
anyone who you feel would be appropriate for, and interested in, this
studentship. Thank you very much!

All best wishes
