Dovetail Labs CFP / Freelance Research Opportunity

Dovetail Labs is a consulting firm founded by academic anthropologists with
the mission to bring the insights of social science to the design and
development of socially responsible technology.

We are seeking researchers with backgrounds in STS or Anthropology to
prepare intellectual briefs (see below) on topics related to the design,
development, deployment and/or reception of artificial intelligence-driven
technologies, big data, and machine learning in non-U.S. settings. We are
also interested in research on analogous technologies or case-studies that
give insight into the ontologies of human/non-human interaction and modes
of governance and social trust.

Compensation will be $2,000 for a completed brief of approximately
8,000-10,000 words (due December 31, 2018).

The intellectual briefs will contain elements of an annotated bibliography
and a literature review. The brief will be descriptive (containing
summaries of authors’ arguments) and synthetic (comparing and contrasting
works). The brief should familiarize an interdisciplinary group of
researchers with a topic so that they understand research trends and major
arguments, including mainstream and more peripheral or critical views.
Please note that the brief is a summary and description, and not an
analysis—it is not intended to provide the brief writer’s opinion,
critique, or reflection.

Examples of briefs we are interested in include (but are not limited to):

-China’s social credit system

-biometrics and behavioral biometrics in Latin America

-ID4Africa

-facial recognition in India

Ideal candidates will have 1) completed their PhD qualifying exams 2)
carried out ethnographic fieldwork with substantial time in the field and
3) will be able to review literature in languages other than English.

We are actively building a pool of researchers for current and future
projects. If you are interested in working with us, but don’t feel that
your proposal fits this project, please feel free to submit your details
for future consideration. If your expertise permits, you may submit more
than one proposal. Applications submitted by November 30, 2018 will be
given priority.

Please apply using this form: https://goo.gl/forms/InEjgcUoLhDry6p52

If you have any questions, please address them to dovetail.labs@gmail.com
with the subject line: Brief proposal.
