call for candidates to develop dementia research for ESCR UBEL

                Call for candidates

We would like to announce the ESRC UBEL 2019 competition for PhD
studentships and express our interest in working with
a prospective individual towards submitting a competitive social science
application in the field of dementia care in the UK for an award based at The
London School of Hygiene and Tropical Diseases (LSHTM).

The ESRC UBEL awards 40-50 grants for prospective PhD researchers at a number
of London institutions, including LSHTM. Successfully UK residents would
receive full fees and a stipend; EU students would only have their fees paid.

If successful, the student will have the opportunity to work closely with
other social scientists at LSHTM, and be supervised by Simon Cohn and
Annelieke Driessen. We are keen to attract someone who has a strong
anthropology, sociology or STS first degree (and possibly Masters) who will
draw on these theories and methods. We have established access to two possible
research sites (carer support groups and residential care homes), which we
believe would provide fascinating possibilities for ethnographic research on
dementia, including rare conditions such as early-onset and Lewy body
dementia.

Possible projects that might draw on these fieldsites include, but are not
limited to:

- questions of home and institutional care (questions could relate to
their permeability and the challenges that come about in transfers between
settings)

- post-diagnosis support for people living with dementia/care service
provision (questions could pertain to how social support is crafted,
experienced and challenged in dementia carer support groups)
If you are interested in submitting a research proposal to this grant scheme
and join our group, please send a one-side CV along with a paragraph on
current and future research interests by email to Simon Cohn
(Simon.Cohn@lshtm.ac.uk) or Annelieke Driessen
(Annelieke.Driessen@lshtm.ac.uk) by
21st of November 2018. In collaboration with us, a preliminary application is
due January, and then if it is progressed, the deadline for full applications
is at the end of February 2019.

Please circulate this call to anyone who might be interested.

All the best,
Simon Cohn and Annelieke Driessen
