DIRECTOR, Science, Technology, and Society Program (Tenure Track, OPEN
RANK, Associate/Full Professor Preferred)

The College of Liberal Arts at California Polytechnic State University, San
Luis Obispo invites applications for a full-time, academic-year
tenure-track position of Assistant/Associate/Full Professor and Director of
Science, Technology, and Society (STS) Program, beginning September 12,
2019. The position includes a strong expectation for teaching excellence,
scholarly productivity and professional development, and service to the
department, college, university, and community. Candidates must demonstrate
the ability to lead the growth and operation of the STS minors and emerging
interdisciplinary programs, including a possible Interdisciplinary Studies
(IS) major and department, and other opportunities. The successful
candidate should demonstrate leadership ability, a broad vision for the
future of STS/IS in the College of Liberal Arts at Cal Poly, and the
ability to effectively collaborate across disciplines. Applications are
sought from any discipline represented by one of the college's 15
tenure-line departments.

This position carries both teaching and administrative duties. Credit
toward tenure may be awarded depending on years of teaching experience,
professional development, and rank. The administrative assignment is for an
initial period of three years, renewable at the Dean's discretion. Academic
rank and salary will be commensurate with the selected candidate's
qualifications and experience.

The typical teaching load in Cal Poly's College of Liberal Arts is 12 units
per quarter, with correspondingly reasonable research/scholarship and
service expectations. Candidates will also have a significant reduction in
course load in the first one to two years to help establish an active
program of research/scholarship/creative activity and to oversee the
leadership of the STS/IS Program. For this position, teaching and service
assignments will be divided between the interdisciplinary programs and the
home department in proportions agreeable to all parties. The successful
candidate will teach courses such as Introduction to Science, Technology,
and Society; Advanced Project-Based Learning in Science, Technology, and
Society; Interdisciplinary Research Methods; and/or specific courses as
determined by areas of expertise and programmatic need. The successful
candidate will be expected to communicate effectively and work
cooperatively with students, faculty, staff, and administration.

Cal Poly strongly values diversity and inclusion, especially in the
classroom and among its areas of study. This search will occur at the same
time as a university-wide cluster of searches designed to increase
curricular coverage of areas related to diversity and inclusion, as well as
to promote inclusive teaching strategies across the university. If the
successful candidate's research and teaching overlaps with the area of
diversity and inclusion, they will have the opportunity to join and support
these university efforts.

PhD in Science and Technology Studies, Interdisciplinary Studies or related
field, or PhD or equivalent with a STS emphasis in any of the following
disciplines in the College of Liberal Arts: Communication Studies, English,
Ethnic Studies, History, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology &
Child Development, Social Sciences (Sociology, Anthropology, Geography),
Women's & Gender Studies and World Languages & Cultures (i.e., Spanish,
French, German). MFA or other terminal Masters Degree would qualify as a
terminal degree in the following CLA disciplines: MFA for Art and Theatre;
MA/MS for Journalism and Graphic Communication. Evidence of successful
university teaching and programmatic leadership are required. Applicants
must have training that intersects in meaningful ways with STS, which can
come from a range of disciplinary homes, and must approach scholarship,
teaching and service from an interdisciplinary perspective. Teaching,
research and service must reflect a level of activity appropriate for rank.
Salary and rank are commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Preference will be given to candidates with a record of demonstrated
excellence in programmatic leadership and development in an STS context.
Experience in an administrative role and/or academic leadership position in
higher education is highly desired.
