Reminder: Fri, August 29 Community Call: =?utf-8?q?=E2=80=9CMitigating the Environmental Impacts of AI=3A From Lab E?= nvironment Metrics to Data Center Pollution”

Friendly reminder: On behalf of the SEEKCommons Project, which is funded
by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), we would like to invite
you to our next community call:
Friday, August 29
6:00 p.m. CET / 12:00 p.m. EST / 9:00 a.m. PST
Via Zoom

In NSF SEEKCommons, we work in a distributed network of STS researchers,
OS practitioners, and socio-environmental researchers to promote science
and technology commons for participative socio-environmental research.
Our call series offers an opportunity to discuss the possibilities of
the commons as a governance framework, with speakers presenting on its
challenges, benefits, lessons learned, and the uncharted possibilities
for “open technologies.”

This month’s Community Call topic:
“Mitigating the Environmental Impacts of AI: From Lab Environment
Metrics to Data Center Pollution” with Tamara Knesse
Measuring the carbon emissions, energy, or water used by an AI model in
a lab does not capture the lived effects of data pollution on bodies and
environments. Through interviews with tech workers across the industry
and community activists on the ground, the speaker is trying to
reconcile these different perspectives. How can the people who are
designing, building, deploying, and regulating digital technologies
really see the visceral effects of their decision-making? How can they
draw connections between the work they are doing on a day-to-day basis,
their mundane workflows, and the devastating long-term environmental and
health impacts of these technologies across the lifecycle?

The series is open to public participation, and registration is
required: https://bit.ly/3EYoMOJ
