5 (!) five year jobs here in Edinburgh.

Please forward generously! Thanks, Lukas

Medicine without Doctors is a six-year Wellcome-funded project exploring the changing authority of medical practices through four case studies: LGBTQ+ health activism, artificial intelligence, abortion care and the physician associate. The project is underpinned by two theoretical pillars: the sociology of care and the philosophy of voice. To do this work, the project brings together a multidisciplinary and sector-spanning team of investigators, from philosophy, socio-legal studies, STS, history, sociology and design, with the aim of creating new, interdisciplinary knowledge. In this project, we are also excited to develop and draw on play methodologies collaboratively. For more information, see our websitehttps://www.medicinewithoutdoctors.org/

We are pleased to announce that we are recruiting five postdoctoral fellows to work on Medicine without Doctors. Each post will be attached to a specific case study on the project. We are looking for applicants to bring their research interests in our case study areas, along with relevant disciplinary experience and an interest in (or curiosity about!) Play to join the team. As a team, we are particularly keen to incorporate concerns of health and social inequalities, the perspectives of marginalised communities and a conceptual focus on care (what is care?) and voice (whose voices are heard?).

These five-year posts will be based across the University of Edinburgh and start in April 2026.

The five posts include:

1. Postdoctoral Fellow working on Abortion Care, based in Law and working with Dr Agomoni Ganguli-Mitra (she/her)

2. Postdoctoral Fellow working on Physician Associates, based in STIS and working with Professor Lukas Englemann (he/him)

3. Postdoctoral Fellow working on socio-legal elements of AI, based in the Centre for Biomedicine, Self and Society and working with Dr Nayha Sethi (she/her)

4. Postdoctoral Fellow working on AI and Physician Associates, based in the Centre for Biomedicine, Self and Society, working with Dr Nayha Sethi (she/her) and Professor Lukas Engelmann (he/him)

5. Postdoctoral Fellow working on LGBTQ+ Health activism, based in the Centre for Biomedicine, Self and Society, working with Dr Ingrid Young (she/her) & Dr Will Nutland (he/him) (The Love Tank).

While each of the roles allow you to bring your own interests and focus and we ask that you outline these in your cover letter, posts 2 –5 ask that you provide a brief, 1-page research proposal. This proposal should indicate the broad area you would like to explore as a starting point for this post, and include indicative research questions, methods, and relevant references.

The deadline for applications is 2 October 2025. Please apply using the University of Edinburgh online system. You will need to apply separately for each post. For any questions regarding the particulars of each post, please contact the relevant team member as indicated on the job advert.

We expect shortlisting to take place by the end of October, and interviews to take place in the first two weeks of December.

We welcome your interest in these posts!
