Submissions open to our Special session "Carrots and Sticks in the Evaluation of (Open) Data Sharing"

Dear all,

We welcome submissions for our special session "Carrots and Sticks in the Evaluation of (Open) Data Sharing" at the 29th Annual International Conference on Science and Technology Indicators (STI ENID 2025) to be held in Bristol (UK) on 3-5 September 2025. The panel is organized by Nicolás Robinson-García (University of Granada), Julia Olmos-Peñuela (University of Valencia) and myself, Inma Aleixos-Borrás (University of Stuttgart/University of Valencia). In our session, we seek to foster a debate on whether (open) data sharing should be rewarded and reflect on its consequences.

Deadline for submissions: 4th April 2025 through https://app.oxfordabstracts.com/stages/77578/submitter

Background and motivation of our panel here. Short description below:

Should open data sharing be rewarded at all? What can be the consequences? We welcome unpublished research papers presenting the quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods applied as well as preliminary or final findings of a study that addresses one of the following issues:

  1. the identification of (supra)national governments’ and funding institutions’ evaluation approaches of (open) data sharing through rewards or penalties,
  2. the examination of the type of quantitative and qualitative indicators or control mechanisms that are being used for these evaluations, and what these indicators or control mechanisms represent. In other words, how FAIR data, data reproducibility and reusability, quality and quantity of data sets, etc. are represented in these indicators or control mechanisms,
  3. the analysis of how these rewards and penalties are shaping researchers’ data sharing practices, and
  4. what type of consequences these evaluation approaches might have for researchers in terms of equity in career assessment within the same research discipline.

Best regards,

Inma, Julia, Nicolás
