Join the Vanguard: Call for Abstracts on Generative AI at 4S Seattle

Dear colleagues,

Just when you thought—or perhaps hoped—that the invitations to submit abstracts for panels at the 4S conference in Seattle later this year had come to an end, here’s yet another one. Apologies for any cross-postings, but I imagine it’s challenging to separate signal from noise when it comes to these announcements.

As the Director of the Digital Work Futures Research Lab at Malmö University (https://www.linkedin.com/company/digitalworkfutures), in collaboration with the Emerging Technologies Research Lab and the FUTURES Hub at Monash University in Melbourne, I am coordinating the panel “Generative AI and the Digital Vanguard: Exploring Daily Transformations in Creative Work.” I would love to hear about your research at the conference, so please consider submitting an abstract (we have previously coordinated challenging, enjoyable, and indeed, delightful panels on similar themes in Honolulu and Amsterdam, and I look forward to another rewarding and productive conference with new connections and collaborations as a result).

Here is the call in its entirety:

Generative AI is often hailed as a transformative force, promising to reshape creative and digital industries by unlocking new potentials in efficiency, creativity, and productivity. Yet, the real nature of this transformation is best understood through the lived experiences of those at the vanguard: professionals actively integrating generative AI into their daily practices. These digital pioneers—software engineers, project managers, CEOs, and creatives—do not merely adopt these tools; they redefine their fields and influence expectations of how generative AI will impact work and life.

This panel explores the quiet, everyday transformations generative AI brings to the work lives of these innovators, focusing on how the technology becomes embedded in routines and workflows. Through close collaboration with practitioners, we aim to capture their insights on how they experience, anticipate, and adapt to generative AI, revealing the social dynamics driving this shift. This collaborative approach provides a grounded perspective on the evolving narratives and practices around the future of work.

We invite empirical, theoretical, and conceptual papers, particularly those developed with practitioners, to enrich this dialogue. Our focus includes the ‘quiet’ ways generative AI integrates into daily work, offering insights that often slip under the scholarly radar. By engaging with those on the digital vanguard, this panel aims to reveal the realities behind generative AI’s transformative promise and examine how these insights are collectively shaping the future of work.

If this sounds like a good fit for your work, do not hesitate—submit your abstract! Here is the link: https://www.4sonline.org/call_for_submissions_seattle.php.

I look forward to your contributions!

Best regards,

Martin Berg
