FW: Call for Applications: CSSM grant for seminar exploring human-microbial relations, DL 28.2.2025
[Apologies for cross-posting!] Dear all, The Centre for the Social Study of Microbes (CSSM) at the University of Helsinki is a hub for social scientists and artists conducting research on human-microbial relations. We aim to develop theory and methods to better make sense of the complex relations between humans, nonhumans, microbes, and their environments. We now invite again applications from researchers, groups, or collectives to organise a research seminar external to the University of Helsinki! The CSSM seminar grant is a competitive grant call to organise a 2-3 day seminar focusing on relations between humans, nonhumans, microbes, and their environments. The objective is to share new research insights and to forge opportunities for networking among social scientists. We also encourage involving other possible relevant groups conducting research on human-microbial relations such as artists, natural scientists, or interested publics. The event should be hosted at a university or research institute – anywhere in the world. Vision, innovation, creativity, and relevance to CSSM aims and objectives will be key selection criteria for in awarding this grant, as will be the potential of the seminar to support/develop collaborative networks beyond the applicant group and CSSM. Applicants from the Global South and members of minorities are especially welcome to apply. Successful application will require institutional affiliation in order to process the payment of the grant. The seminar should take place between August and December 2025. Please submit your application, between 3-4 pages (font size 12p, single spacing), to cssm@helsinki.fi by 28th of February 2025. Your application should include: * Theme and rationale of your seminar * Plan for development of theory and methods for the social study of microbes * Innovation and creativity of your vision * Communication and publication plan with target audiences Administrative aspects which should be considered: * Time, location, and planned number of participants * Budget plan (max. €11,000) including a breakdown of costs * (Possible) previous experience organising event and institutional support * Networking plan: how do you intend to expand your own network? * How does the seminar benefit the Global South and/or members of minorities? (if applicable) Grantees will be expected to submit a 2000-word report with a description of the activity and how the application plans were fulfilled one month after the workshop, including financial details of the workshop implementation. We are looking forward to your applications! We will aim to send out our decision by mid-March 2025. Please spread the call in your local networks, thank you very much.
