CfP 4S open panel - The Third Aerospace Revolutio=?utf-8?q?n and Its Reverberations =28Ren=C3=A9 Catal=C3=A1n Hidalgo - Naom?= i Veenhoven)

                Dear Colleagues,

René Catalán Hidalgo (rlcatala@uc.cl) and Naomi Veenhoven
(n.i.veenhoven@u.nus.edu) are organising a panel entitled "The Third Space
Revolution and its Reverberations" as part of the upcoming 4S meeting in
Seattle in September.

Our invitation is fundamentally inter- and transdisciplinary. In this panel,
we aim to initiate a dialogue that necessitates diverse perspectives to tackle
the challenges posed by a revolution that, beyond reshaping our skies, will
have far-reaching impacts across various fields such as mobility, technology,
infrastructure, energy, work, information, law, geography, economics, and
politics. We seek contributions from those who can help map the reverberations
of this revolution and critically engage with the implication of these the
actual and imagined changes.

Alongside these discussions, we would love to take advantage of being in
Seattle and extend the panel's activities beyond the 4S. We plan on visiting
the Boeing factory and perhaps the Museum of Flight too. Of course, these
activities would be organised independently, but we believe they are
worthwhile to further the discussions in the panel.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Abstract:

In response to the growing concerns regarding the climate impacts of various
industries, the aerospace industry is in the midst of a transformational
process that has been termed the "Third Aerospace Revolution” (3AR). This
revolution is a multifaceted transformation driven by the convergence of
advances in manufacturing technologies and digital solutions with the
aspirations of a sustainable industry. In other words, this industry seeks to
achieve improvements in operational
efficiency and product offerings to position themselves as a leader in the
global pursuit of sustainable innovation. Whereas some of these
transformations are currently on their way, 3AR is also an aspirational
discourse full of speculation and the imaginative conjuring of possible
futures.

In this panel, we seek to further discuss the impact of these real and
imagined transformations. As this revolution involves an expansion of the use
of airspace through urban aeromobility, propelled by the use of clean energy
and mediated by automation, it entails the reconfiguration of our skies, and
its consequences reverberate widely in different areas, including:
Social: Increases in inequalities and impacts on the labor market.
Economic: Changes in the supply chain and significant investments.
Political: The challenge of regulating the use of these new technologies and
the new form of airspace.
Ethical: How the increased use of artificial intelligence for decision-making
coexists with accountability and how to address potential digital
vulnerabilities.
Environmental: A greater impact on flora, fauna, and atmospheric phenomena.

This panel aims to raise reflections that may seem like they belong to the
future, but that demand attention today. It is a broad inter- and
transdisciplinary invitation to critically assess the conjuring of the future
of the aerospace industry and discuss the unexpected reverberations that a
process of thismagnitude can bring to the world as we know it.
