Vacancy: Associate Professor of Health Law (and Governance), Maastricht University
We are looking for an associate professor in Health Law to join our interdisciplinary department Health, Ethics and Society in Maastricht. Our apologies for (inevitable) cross-posting. For more details, see below, or here. JOB DESCRIPTION PROFILE We invite applications for an associate professor of European and Global Health Law, willing to contribute to our mission in both research, education and service and would feel at home in our diverse team. Our critical approach is the core of both our research and teaching activities. We employ different critical perspectives, including legal philosophy, social geography, philosophy of public health, medical history, biomedical ethics, as well as science and technology studies. We employ all these critical lenses, solely or combined, to critically reflect on an array of practices and social structures. Under the heading of the participation society, we are asked to rearrange responsibilities of health and care. Increasing datafication of health care and research raises legal, ethical and philosophical questions about the nature of that data, how it is used, and how it travels. Environmental concerns are increasingly influencing public health, ranging from air pollution to food quality and safety. Policies, technologies and agencies monitoring them raise critically questions about technology, data and power structures across the globe. As technological and social innovations progress, so does the portfolio of our research and our approaches to teaching. TASKS Within the context sketches above, and fitting the sketched profile, you will be responsible for developing, coordinating and delivering Health Law education at both Bachelor's and Master's level. This includes teaching curricula in Health Sciences, Medicine, European Public Health, and Global Health. Naturally, you will shape your own teaching profile and contributions based on your expertise and the expectations and requirements of the relevant curricula. Your research will focus on European and Global Health Law, with direct links to existing programmes in Health Ethics and Global Health. You will have your own distinctive line of research in Health Law in which one or more of these connections have already been developed. In both teaching and research, we ask for a broad philosophical and sociological approach to law, including attention for law-in-practice. You are expected to participate in several faculty bodies, such as FHML-REC (the faculty ethics committee that oversees research that is not subject to the Medical Research (Human Subjects) Act). You will collaborate with and lead the existing Health Law & Governance research and educational team in our department, which is itself embedded in the research school Caphri (Care and Public Health Research Institute). We encourage crossing boundaries within and outside the department, school and faculty. You have experience in attracting national and international research funding and maintain appropriate connections with care. You have a record of accomplishment of international peer-reviewed publication in health law and beyond. REQUIREMENTS * Relevant university bachelor and master degrees, with a specialization in health law or adjacent expertise. * Completed PhD. * Experience with health law, health governance and/or health ethics education. * Relevant research publications including a personal research line. * Experience with supervision and leadership. * Experience with research acquisition. * Oral and written communication skills in English. Command of the Dutch language is not a requirement, but you are expected to develop this over time. * Experience in supervising PhD students. * Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) or equivalent; required to be obtained within the first year of appointment, if not already obtained. * A flexible, positive and constructive working attitude. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT You will be hired as an associate professor for a period of 18 months, after which a permanent contract will follow given satisfactory performance. The anticipated size of the contract of 0.8 FTE, in which teaching and research time are balanced. Depending on experience and qualification, the maximum gross monthly salary is € 6,702 (on a full-time basis) in accordance with scale 13 of the Dutch university collective bargaining agreement. An 8% holiday and an 8.3% year-end allowance is also provided. In addition to good primary employment conditions, UM also offers an attractive package of secondary employment conditions. The terms of employment of Maastricht University are set out in the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (CAO). Furthermore, local UM provisions also apply.
