PhD Position in in Social Studies of Science and Medicine – University of Lausanne, Switzerland
Dear colleagues,

please find below the advertisement for a PhD position within the framework of
the Ambizione project "Constructing the Biosocial: An engaged inquiry into
epigenetics and post-genomic biosciences".

Please, do not hesitate to circulate it in your networks, nor to contact me or
prof. Panese for any question.

Best regards,
Luca

Introduction

UNIL is a leading international teaching and research institution, with over
5,000 employees and 15,500 students split between its Dorigny campus, CHUV and
Epalinges. As an employer, UNIL encourages excellence, individual recognition
and responsibility.

Presentation

Within the framework of the Swiss National Science Foundation funded Ambizione
project "Constructing the Biosocial: An engaged inquiry into epigenetics and
post-genomic biosciences", the Institute of Social Sciences (ISS) and the
Sciences and Technologies Studies Laboratory (STSLab) at the University of
Lausanne announce the following open position:

Doctoral Student SNSF in Social Studies of Science and Medicine

The research plan focuses on epigenetics as an eminent example of post-genomic
ways to dissect and characterize the entanglement of biological and
socio-environmental factors contributing to health and disease. These
"biosocial" themes in epigenetics will be explored across two lines of
biomedical research on "stress" focusing respectively on its role in
psychiatric (e.g. depression, anxiety, schizophrenia) and metabolic (e.g.
obesity, hyperglycaemia) conditions. The two lines of research are going to be
pursued in parallel by the PhD student and the Project Leader, and in ways
that maximise complementarity, common exploitation of data collected, and
collaborations in the project. The research plan sets out to describe how
biosocial accounts of "stress" emerge in epigenetics from (i) daily activities
of research groups (i.e. labs, clinical departments, epidemiological research
teams), (ii) collaborations across disciplinary perspectives (e.g. programs,
networks and negotiations among diverse experts), (iii) specific
socio-political configurations of research (e.g. institutional settings,
national contexts).

Job information

* Starting date of employment: 01.10.2020
* Contract duration:4 years
* Engagement rate: 100%
* Workplace: University of Lausanne, Faculty of Social and Political
Sciences (ISS-STSLab)
* Gross salary: salary conditions of full-time PhD employment established
by SNSF standards

Your responsibilities

The PhD student is expected to develop her own thesis, to actively contribute
to the project, and to communicate results (orally and in writing) internally,
in faculty settings and in national/international academic venues (e.g.
scientific journals, conferences). The major research focus of the PhD project
will be on scientists situated constructions of complex biosocial ontologies,
experimental systems, and socio-political translations of the epigenetic
effects of stress in metabolic conditions. In particular, the goal of the PhD
project is to: (a) document the production of biosocial accounts of "stress"
within specific epigenetic research settings (e.g. molecular biology,
translational or personalized medicine and epidemiology); (b) investigate how
epigenetic methods function as boundary object across disciplinary approaches
to the study of "stress" in collaborative research network. The PhD student
will be affiliated to the STSLab (Science and Technology Studies Laboratory)
at UNIL, and work in close collaboration with Luca Chiapperino (Project
Leader, Ambizione Lecturer) and Francesco Panese (PhD Supervisor, Professor of
Social Studies of Science and Medicine).

See also contract specifications (cahier des charges in
french)

Your qualifications

* The applicant has successfully completed a Masters degree in science
studies and/or sociology of health and/or medicine, as well as related
disciplines and domains.
* Considering the expected fieldwork in the domain of epigenetics, and
related areas of biomedicine, a familiarity with biomedical sources, as well
as a developed skill set in social studies of science and biomedicine are
advantageous assets for candidates.
* Applicants should be fluent in English and French.

What the position offers you

The doctoral student is expected to interact closely with project members in
the framework of a dynamic and international project, as well as to valorise
his/her research in international peer-reviewed publications and oral
presentations. The institutional affiliation to the STSLab of the Institute of
Social Sciences, with its several research collaborations within and beyond
the University of Lausanne, represents also an attractive element of this
position enabling intellectual exchanges with peers and senior researchers
working on themes related to the project at issue.

Possibilities of attending integrative courses, continuous education and
university seminars will no doubt enrich the doctoral formation of the
student.

We offer a nice working place in a multicultural, diverse and dynamic academic
environment. Opportunities for professional training, a lot of activities and
other benefits to discover.
www.unil.ch/carrieres

Contact for further information

Dr. Luca Chiapperino
Faculty of Social and Political Sciences
Institute of Social Sciences
Email: luca.chiapperino@unil.ch

Prof. Francesco Panese
Faculty of Social and Political Sciences
Institute of Social Sciences
Email: francesco.panese@unil.ch

Your application

The application should include:

* A motivation letter, detailing the interest and competences of candidate
related to projects topic (2 pp. max).
* A full cv, including also non-academic information relevant to the
evaluation of candidates profile.
* At least one letter of recommendation.

Only applications submitted through the university
website will be
considered.
