<br>Anticipatory Expertise*
<br> has just
<br>been published in *Science & Technology Studies*.
<br>

<br>The special issue starts from the observation that anticipatory expertise –
<br>produced with the help of models, scenarios and computer simulations - has
<br>become an indispensable core ingredient of contemporary attempts to govern
<br>complex problems. At the same time, it has also become a field of
<br>contention, wherein a variety of technologies of knowledge production,
<br>social groups, and visions of the future coexist and compete. We build on
<br>ongoing scholarly discussions about anticipatory knowledge and its
<br>‘performativity’, while also setting out to take a fresh look at the
<br>politics of anticipatory expertise. The papers in the special issue span a
<br>variety of governance scales (local, national, global), country cases (the
<br>US and the European Union, France, Germany and Belize) and policy domains
<br>(energy, climate, agriculture and food policy, risk regulation, forest and
<br>water management, policing). Taken together, they illustrate the
<br>productivity of a perspective that combines STS and political sociology to
<br>gain a finer-grained understanding of anticipatory expertise in public
<br>policy.
