UK/EU PhD studentships: Marginalisation and the microbe
We are appointing two doctoral researchers to work with Dr Catherine Will on Wellcome Trust funded research on Marginalisation and the microbe: how to tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR) without increasing health inequalities from 1st October 2019.
Antimicrobial resistance is increasingly appearing in common bacterial infections. Responses include more careful use of antibiotics, but attempts to preserve their effectiveness could exacerbate existing health inequalities. This research will compare past, present and evolving responses to infections in sexual and reproductive health, including those more likely to affect groups made marginal due to age, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, race, poverty and class. Careful comparisons of mobilisation by policy makers, scientists, clinical professionals – and patients where relevant – will give a critical edge to analysis of political and social factors shaping this field, and different ways of making inequality visible and addressing stigma.
Project 1: This project will explore the experiences of people living with persistent and recurrent infections of the urinary tract (UTI) and their online communities.
Project 2: This project will explore the issue of Group B Streptococcus testing in pregnancy.
We hope researchers will consider a range of methods including ethnography and/or digital methods in pursuing these projects. You should have Masters level training in social science methodology, ideally in Sociology, Gender Studies, STS or Anthropology, or equivalent relevant experience in research at an advanced level. Applicants with a background in STS would be very much welcomed. There is a generous stipend from the Wellcome Trust (starting at £19919) and lots of opportunities for development, including funding for conferences and travel to the United States for workshops and other events during the project, which also involves researchers at San Francisco State University, University of California Berkeley and the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.

More details can be found on jobs.ac.uk. The closing date for applicants is 29th April and we expect to interview in early May.

Please contact Dr Will with informal enquiries: c.will@sussex.ac.uk.
_______________________________________________
EASST's Eurograd mailing list
Eurograd (at) lists.easst.net
Unsubscribe or edit subscription options: http://lists.easst.net/listinfo.cgi/eurograd-easst.net

Meet us via https://twitter.com/STSeasst

Report abuses of this list to Eurograd-owner@lists.easst.netview formatted text
