Funded PhD studentships at the interface between social science, AI and biomedicine
The UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training CDT in Biomedical Artificial Intelligence seeks to promote cutting edge research at the interface between AI, biomedicine/health and social science. We offer research training and supervision to equip our students with deep understanding in Responsible Research and Innovation in the application of advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data science in Biomedicine and Health. Our students are expected to integrate the social, legal and ethical dimensions into responsible conduct of Biomedical AI research.
In addition this CDT seeks to support some specific doctoral research projects centred around social science and humanities concerns. We encourage candidates from various backgrounds to submit proposals for doctoral research. These can have a wide range of foci but might address issues such as:
- Trust, intelligibility, liability in the use of AI-based tools in medical diagnosis
- Transparency, reproducibility and inference in Biomedical science
- Bias and fairness in big data/AI based biomedical research
- Resilience, Dependability and Governance of autonomous systems in health and social care
Interested candidates may wish to discuss their ideas with Professor Robin Williams (R.Williams@ed.ac.uk), who convenes the social science strand of the CDT, who will be happy to link potential applicants to relevant supervisory expertise drawn from the Schools of Social and Political Science, the Law School, The University of Edinburgh Business School, Edinburgh College of Art and The Usher Institute.
The application process and eligibility requirements are described here. The application deadline for awards for 2021 entry is 14th December 2020
Please forward this to others who may be interested, with apologies for cross-posting
many thanks
Robin
