Dear colleagues,

I am pleased to bring into memory again - and encourage you to share in your
networks - our Call for Entries: Special Issue Comics as media of knowledge,
Journal for Cultural Analysis and European Ethnology/Zeitschrift fr
Empirische Kulturwissenschaft.

Comics, graphic novels, caricatures, anime, gouache and illustrations wanted!
As editors of the flagship journal of the German Association for Cultural
Analysis and European Ethnology, we decided to turn the first issue of the
122nd year of its appearance (1/2026) into a stage for comics: as modes of
ethnographic narration and ethnographic observation. The upcoming special
issue will explore the sequential interplay between visual and textual
elements through scholarly articles, reviews and critical essays.
The methods of ethnography are changing: Experimental and multimodal
approaches to knowledge production are providing us new opportunities. Drawing
is emerging as an increasingly significant mode of expression alongside
established modes of textual, sonic and cinematic practices (Bonnano 2019,
Fassin 2022, Povinelli 2021; Waterston/Condon 2020).
Comic artist Tina Brenneisen considers the medium as the 9th Art,
highlighting its potential for contributing to (scientific) knowledge
production. What role can sequential forms of expression play in science? We
seek for submissions that shape knowledge through sequential forms (including,
but not limited to anime, comics, graphic novels, caricatures, illustrations,
gouache, concrete poetry, etc.).
All languages and typographies are welcome! Non-English and non-German
contributions would need to be accompanied by an addendum which renders a
translation.
We particularly encourage contributions that engage with disciplinary
discussions in the fields of cultural and social anthropology as well as
ethnology and folklore studies offering novel impulses for visual design and
communication of ethnographic knowledge.
Unpublished work and contextualized excerpts from previously published
materials are also welcome. Submissions can range from single illustrations to
a maximum of 25 sequentially designed pages.

Please submit your work by April 30th, 2025, to: aufsaetze@zekw.de

With kind greetings also from the rest of the editorial team (Regina Bendix,
Timo Heimerdinger, Thomas Thiemeyer),

Anne
