Full-time Postdoc position (1+2 years) in Sociology of Science &
Technology
School of Management, Politecnico di Milano
The School of Management of Politecnico di Milano invites expressions of
interest for one Post-doc position in the area of Sociology of
Science & Technology.
The School of Management
groups together the
Department of Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering and MIP -
the Graduate School of Business of Politecnico di Milano.
Its mission is to contribute to the collective good through a critical
understanding of the opportunities offered by innovation, accomplished
by creating and sharing knowledge through high-quality education,
high-quality research and engagement with the community.
The School of Management today includes a broad range of research
initiatives and teaching activities, with over 4,900 students enrolled
in degree programmes.
Politecnico di Milano is one of the most prominent technical
universities in the world, ranked 20th in the World, 7th in Europe, and
1st in Italy, according to QS World University Ranking by Subject –
Engineering & Technology 2020.
The position is for one *Full-time *Postdoc for 1 year, renewable for 2
additional years. Tenure track opportunities are envisaged afterwards.
The Postdoc will conduct research full-time at the intersection of
Sociology and Science & Technology. We are especially interested in
candidates who wish to investigate processes of democratization of
science with an STS approach (Science and Technology Studies), including
such topics as public engagement, citizen science, socially distributed
expertise, crowd science, RRI, etc. In particular, a key task will be
the relationship between crowd authority and experts authority in
legitimizing scientific knowledge and technological or political
choices. Research questions include, but are not limited to, the following:
·What is the social legitimacy and representativeness of digital crowds
V. expert judgments?
·What makes a crowd judgment appear representative, or fair, or
acceptable to policy makers?
·How do the decisions of the crowd compare to those of the experts (in
terms of legitimacy, representativeness, social acceptability, etc.)?
·How do they compare when the decisions involve technical/scientific
understanding? Or judgmental/ethical reasoning? Or both?
The position will start in fall 2020. Gross salary is €30.000 and
coverage by the national healthcare service is given as part of the
employment position.
The position does not include teaching duties. Teaching at the
undergraduate, graduate and master level is possible and encouraged and
will entitle to additional compensation.
In an effort to foster internationalization, the SoM is encouraging
applications of foreign citizens and of nationals with international
experience. Applicants should have a solid methodological background and
a track-record (or proved pipeline) of publications in primary
international outlets. Knowledge of the Italian language is not
required, but the ability to teach in English is mandatory.

Research environment
The postdoc will join the School of Management as part of the
Entrepreneurship Finance and Innovation (EFI) group. The group is
composed of more than 15 scholars who conduct research in several areas
of innovation, finance and entrepreneurship with a variety of approaches
(quantitative, qualitative, theoretical, experimental). The group
provides a friendly, stimulating environment that encourages personal
and professional development and is especially supportive of young
scholars. New hires are offered support from research assistants, access
to proprietary data of the group, and have plenty of opportunities to
collaborate with senior and junior researchers. Research by EFI members
has appeared in journals such as: Strategic Management Journal,
Management Science, Research Policy, Science, PNAS, Entrepreneurship

Besides, the postdoc will join the study unit META – Social Sciences and
Humanities for Science and Technology (http://www.meta.polimi.it). META
is an interdisciplinary network of scholars in the humanities and social
sciences aiming to produce and disseminate knowledge and offering
expertise in epistemological, ethical and social issues related to the
processes of science, technology, and innovation.
Campus and city
The School of Management is in a brand-new building located in the
Bovisa campus, near the lecture theatres, the start-up incubator and the
school of design, among others. The campus is in the Milan urban area.
Central stations of Porta Garibaldi and Milan Cadorna are at 2-stops of
public transportation (10 minutes). Milan is the second largest city in
Italy. It is the business and financial capital of the country and one
of the most important hubs for design and fashion in the world. It is
home to a vibrant and international population and has a large offer of
cultural attractions and events.
