Francis’ main research interests focus on how knowledge infrastructures—such as algorithms, AI, and big data—reshape knowledge production in both society and science. He has conducted research on how algorithms for pandemic surveillance shape how we understand and manage disease. He is currently leading a project that investigates the impact of machine learning and big data on scientific knowledge production in the biosciences.
Francis is part of the contact committee for the Swedish and Nordic STS networks. He organizes the Swedish Digital STS Hub and has led PhD summer schools on algorithms, as well as a multitude of international workshops. He is also part of the editorial collective for the journal Valuation Studies and has served as a reviewer for several ERC grants.
