Conference: Data, Knowledge, and Genomic Causality - 9-10 December, 2019

The 10th international workshop of the Jacques Loeb Centre for the History
and Philosophy of the Life Sciences
at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev
in Beesheva, Israel will take place on 9-10 December 2019 in the
auditorium of the Ilse Katz Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technology
Building (Building 51

).
Titled Data, Knowledge and Genomic Causality, this two-day workshop will
explore how the era of 'Big Data' technology and computation has impacted
scientific practice and philosophy in 21st-century informational biology.
Just a few of talks include:

- James Briscoe, Francis Crick Institute, U.K
“Gene regulatory networks and embryonic pattern formation: Experiment,
theory and simulation”

- Douglas Erwin, Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, U.S.A.

“Inferring ancestral functions for highly conserved developmental genes
in early animals and their ancestors”

- Dan Graur, University of Houston, U.S.A.
“Data is not information, information is not knowledge, knowledge is not
wisdom, wisdom is not truth: The many methodological crimes of data-driven
big science”

- Jeremy Gunawardena, Harvard Medical School, U.S.A.
“Beyond ‘Big Data’ and ‘Big Model’: The role of abstraction in
biology”

- Robert Weinberg, Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, U.S.A.
“The significant limits of genomic analyses”
