The Faculty of Linguistics, Cultures and Arts at Johann Wolfgang Goethe
University Frankfurt am Main, Germany invites applications for the
following position starting 1 October 2019:
Professorship (W1, tenure track) in Digital Anthropology / Science and
Technology Studies
The initial tenure track appointment is for six years according to § 64
of the Higher Education Act of the State of Hessen (HHG). The
professorship is funded by the Bund-Länder-Programm zur Förderung des
wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses (BLP). Upon positive evaluation, the
incumbent will be promoted to a permanent position at a higher level
(W2). Applications are invited from post-doctoral researchers in the
early stages of their careers (according to § 64, para. 3 HHG the
doctorate should not date back to more than four years).
The professorship is assigned to the Institute of Cultural Anthropology
and European Ethnology. Successful applicants are expected to contribute
to establishing Science and Technology Studies (STS) at Goethe
University and to foster interdisciplinary linkages within and beyond
Goethe University by contributing to the development of
multi-disciplinary research training groups as well as participation in
other types of research cooperation.
Qualified candidates hold a doctorate, PhD or equivalent in Science and
Technology Studies, Anthropology or related fields. We are looking for
candidates with published research in science and technology studies,
anthropology of science and technology or adjacent areas, and with
current or future research interests in the emergence of new
socio-material practices in an interconnected world. Competitive
candidates will demonstrate expertise in ethnographic research and be
committed to contributing to recent debates on fieldwork epistemologies
at the interface of STS and digital anthropology. They will be able to
critically engage with the use of digital technologies in/for scholarly
research and teaching, especially in the humanities and social sciences.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach graduate courses and
to engage in curriculum building in the English-language Master Program
“Science and Technology Studies: Economies, Governance, Life” and to
supervise graduate and postgraduate work in this field. Ability to also
teach in the German-language Bachelor Program “Kulturanthropologie und
Europäische Ethnologie” is an asset.
The designated salary for the position is based on the German university
pay scale or equivalent. Goethe University aims at increasing the
