Workshop on Circularity - Call for Papers
CALL for PAPERS
Circular Thinking in Sustainable HCI – A workshop in conjunction with the NordiCHI 2018 (http://www.nordichi2018.org/) conference in Oslo, Norway
In this workshop we will critically engage with the different aspects, applications, and implications of circularity and ask: Is circularity a principle of sustainable HCI? In order to answer this question, the workshop combines a variety of methods. The starting point for this exploration are the artifacts that the participants will present in a ‘show and tell’ session. These artifacts represent each participant’s work or interest in sustainable HCI as well as an idea or form of circularity. Through two more exploratory sessions, we will give form and shape to what circular thinking can contribute to sustainable HCI. In the final session of the workshop we will map our findings on the most iconic digital device of our time, the mobile phone. Acknowledging the central role of design in the sustainability of products and services, we will end our workshop with a discussion: who and what will benefit from this re-design?
You can apply to the workshop by submitting a position paper (pdf-format only, 1-3 pages), which should include the following:
• Briefly describe your HCI research interests and/or briefly describe your sustainability work.
• Shortly describe your reflections on circular thinking in sustainable HCI
• An image of the artifact you will bring to the 'show and tell' – session
• A short description of the artifact and how it may contribute to circular thinking
Please send your position paper by email to both Maja van der Velden (majava@ifi.uio.no) and Alma Culén (almira@ifi.uio.no). More information on the workshop’s site: http://circularthinking.blog
We expect to include 15-25 participants. If there are many prospective applicants, the workshop organizers will strive to put together a diverse set of participants from the research community as well as from industry. Submissions will be reviewed based on quality, originality, and their potential contribution to achieving workshop goals. At least one author of each paper is expected to attend the workshop.
Important dates:
Deadline for application: 10 August 2018
Notification of acceptance: 17 August 2018
Workshop date (one full day): Saturday 29 September 2018
Looking forward to seeing you in Oslo,
Organisers Maja van der Velden (University of Oslo), Miquel Ballester (Fairphone), Oliver Bates (Lancaster University), Alma Culén (University of Oslo), Elina Eriksson (KTH Royal Institute of Technology), Daniel Pargman (KTH Royal Institute of Technology)
