Expert survey on "light pollution" (ends April 30) - invitation to participate and/or share

Dear colleagues,
please help us spread our world-wide online survey on the issue of
"light pollution" (see invitation letter below). It addresses anyone
with an expertise in lighting and/or light pollution, including light
manufacturers, urban planners, experts for night-time urbanism/tourism,
environmentalists, chronobiologists, energy infrastructure providers, ...
Thanks and best regards,

Dear lighting experts and light pollution experts,

We would like to
invite you to participate in a world-wide expert
survey and thereby become part of our research and book project “Light
Pollution – a Global Discussion
. We have noticed a rising
interest in the topic in the scientific world, in environmental contexts
and in the world of applied lighting. This survey is unique by bringing
experts of these fields together.

T
o begin with the online-survey, click here:
https://www.soscisurvey.de/LightPollutionGlobalDiscussion/.

The survey
link will
be active until April 30, 2018. Please, feel free to forward it to
colleagues with an expertise in lighting and light pollution in all
parts of the world!

This surveyaims to engage experts for lighting and light pollution from
around the world in a
debate about key problems, possib
le
solutions as well as transdisciplinary collaborations in the field. The
aggregated results will feed into a policy report and will be given back
to the public in the form of a book publication (available online as a
free e-book in fall 2018). For the book, we will also invite some survey
participants to take part in moderated group discussions (conference
calls) in May/June 2018.

For more information, see
“*Light Pollution – a
Global Discussion

Thank you in advance for your contribution to our discussion!

Best regards,
Etta Dannemann, Josiane Meier and Nona Schulte-Römer

Relevance: light pollution – a global public concern?

Light pollution can be described as the inappropriate or excessive use
of artificial light at night (see
http://www.darksky.org/light-pollution/). In recent years, public
concern about the environmental and health effects of light pollution
has increased, particularly in North America, Europe and some Asian
cities. These concerns are intensified by scientific insights about the
negative ecological effects of light emissions on wildlife and the
introduction of LED lighting, which can be bright and disturbing. So
far, light pollution has been discussed mainly as a
problem of industrialized countries, where illumination levels are
already high. Yet, light levels are increasing rapidly in developing
countries as light poverty is being combatted. Therefore, we think that
it is timely to initiate a global expert discussion that explores the
roles of lighting specifiers, researchers, activists, politicians and
other experts and actors within the public realm. We hope to discover
opinions and knowledge from many different countries in order to learn
from dark places as well as very dynamic lighting developments.
