quantitative approaches

(Spanishversion below)
Since the early years of STS there has beena certain tension between the use
of quantitative methodologies and approachesand the theories developed within
the field (Rottolo et al., 2015). Quantitativeapproaches are seen as
reductionist and part of the Western hegemonic model ofscience and technology,
which Science and Technology Studies have oftenquestioned. On the other hand,
a large part of STS has relied mostly onqualitative approaches, with some
exceptions, as in the case of scientometricsand bibliometrics (Wyatt et al.,
2015). However, the emergence in the last two decades of
informationtechnologies as powerful research tools for all disciplines has
attracted theattention of some academics, which have incorporated them into
theirmethodological repertoire. Such is the case of scholars working
withinActor-Network Theory and engaging in the use of software-assisted
methods fornetwork mapping and quantitative text analysis (Venturini, 2012).
The conveners of this panel seek todetermine the current status of STS
research with a quantitative approach inthe context -although not exclusively-
of Latin America, including, but notlimiting to, papers in the following lines
of work:
• Papers that address, from a theoretical standpoint, the possible
epistemological tension between the main theories and currents of STSand
quantitative approaches and methodologies.
• Papers that, based on a STS theoreticaland methodological framework, use
mainly methodologies or quantitativeapproaches to achieve their research
objectives.
• Papers that address the growing influenceand ubiquity of information and
communication technologies, includingartificial intelligence and big data, and
their reception and criticism withinSTS studies; for example, their possible
influence in reorienting STS researchtowards quantitative approaches.
The abstracts for this panel should have amaximum of 400 words. It is
recommended that they contain the followingelements: a) the argument that will
be presented; b) its theoretical, methodological and empirical support, c) the
importance and originality of thetopic for the STS field and d) the
contribution of the paper to knowledge inits field. The title of the Panel to
which it is addressed must be specified inthe abstracts, the full name (s) of
the author (s), and their institutionalaffiliation. Only in specific cases can
papers be presented outside thesesessions.
The coordinators of the Panels will be incharge of assessing the abstracts,
coordinating and ordering the presentationsin specific work tables. The
Scientific Committee may reorganize sessions for abetter organization of the
congress.
Thedeadline for submission of abstracts is March 10, 2018.
The abstracts should be uploaded at http://esocite2018.cl where there is
moreinformation available. Specificquestions about the panel can be
addressed to renatogiovanni.poncianosandoval(at)phd.unipd.it

CTS hacia enfoques cuantitativos.
