Applications open: fully-funded Wellcome Trust 4yr PhD programme: ‘One Health Models of Disease: Science, Ethics and Society’ (University of Edinburgh)

                Dear colleagues

Edinburgh Infectious Diseases and the Centre for Biomedicine, Self and Society (CBSS), University of Edinburgh, are now open to receiving applications from the first cohort of students on a new Wellcome Trust-funded 4yr PhD programme: ‘One Health Models of Disease: Science, Ethics and Society’. This scheme is open to biomedical scientists, social scientists, and bioethicists.

In Yr1, students on the programme will receive class- and lab-based bioscience training, as well as seminar-based learning in the ethical and social dimensions of techniques such as gene-editing. In Yrs2-4, students will complete their doctoral research, with students who are continuing down a social sciences/bioethics PhD pathway being supervised in CBSS by Sarah Chan, Agomoni Ganguli-Mitra, or me. Students on the CBSS pathway will, ideally, have a BSc in a biological sciences subject and an MA/MSc in a relevant social science (e.g. sociology, STS) or humanities (e.g. bioethics, law) discipline.

The programme will start in October 2020 with a deadline for application of 12PM (GMT) on Thursday 16 January 2020. The programme will have an intake of 6 students per year, and is open to all students regardless of country of citizenship. All students will have their fees paid in full, and receive a tax-free starting stipend of £19,919 per annum - plus travel and research funds. Details are here: https://www.findaphd.com/phds/program/wellcome-trust-funded-four-year-phd-programme-in-one-health-models-of-disease-science-ethics-and-society/?p4622

I’d be delighted to answer any questions for students wanting to do an STS/sociology/bioethics PhD as part of the programme (e.g. in the sociology of lab animal welfare, etc.).

All the best

Martyn
