<br>A one-day workshop for science, technology, innovation and society scholars at post-graduate and early career stages.

<br>In the fields of science, technology and innovation studies, data is now big. For STIS scholars, data is not merely a source of disinterested evidence. It is also a site of inquiry in itself, an extractive resource, and increasingly, a tool of governance. So how can STIS scholars, especially those with modest quantitative training, get to grips with data driven research?
<br>
<br>In this workshop we explore where sources of data be found and created and how they can be used paying attention to data sources, biases and limitations. In doing so we will be attentive to how can STIS scholars can avoid technocratic tendencies and retain commitments to diversity, reflexivity and democracy. The workshop will give STIS post-graduate and early career researchers an introduction to doing data science research for STIS, including an introduction to network analysis; data sources, data biases and limitations; as well as an opportunity to gain feedback from experts and peers in an informal environment about their own data science research, however early stage it is.

<br>This will offer important skill development for early career scholars who will work towards a better understanding of how to use data science methods in their own research. Participants will be asked to bring their own ideas and / or data to the workshop.

<br>ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
<br>The workshop will be a site for interdisciplinary idea-exchange and provide an opportunity for participants to expand their network of contacts and collaborate on data science themes.
<br>During an introductory session participants will learn the basics of data science including an introduction to network analysis and data sources, data biases and limitations. Participants will then be invited to explore the topic through engaging with peers working in similar substantive areas while cross-fertilisation with others from various theoretical backgrounds or empirical sites will be actively encouraged. The workshop will continue with a keynote speech on data science by Juan-Mateos Garcia from Nesta followed by advice and facilitation during an interactive session, which will be provided by a senior scholar well-known for their data science research. These activities fulfil a core aim of the forum to support scholars as they transition from PhDs to early career and on to mid-career research, whilst reflecting the diversity of STIS and the importance of continued dialogue with other scholars.

<br>Workshop participants are encouraged to attend the networking dinner on the evening of 15th April in Brighton. Funds are available to cover travel and maintenance, especially for those with caring responsibilities. Please contact Josie Coburn (josie.coburn@sussex.ac.uk) for more details. STS scholars from departments in which STS is not a core discipline are particularly encouraged to attend.

<br>ABOUT THE ORGANISERS
<br>The workshop is hosted by the Postgraduate Forum for Science, Technology and Innovation Studies (PF-STIS) and supported by SPRU - Science Policy Research Unit and the University of Sussex Doctoral School. PF-STIS is a self-organised forum for doctoral students and early career researchers to exchange ideas and discuss academic and professional development. PF-STIS aims to be a space that encourages new scholars to refine their ideas, methodologies and projects in dialogue with one another and to provide a network of colleagues as people move into professional roles. PF-STIS welcomes a broad range of topics including studies focusing on sciences, technologies and innovation.
