CfP Special Issue "Sustainability and Technological Trajectories of Erosion"

                Dear colleagues,

Apologies for any cross-posting.
Hope you’re having a great start of the year!

Harro van Lente and I are currently preparing a special issue on
technological “trajectories of erosion”, to use Elisabeth Shove and
Gordon
Walker’s phrase. This is aimed to address the elephant in the room in STS:
what happens when technologies die? This special issue also ties in very
well with our session at Nordic STS Conference

later this year. Looking forward to your submissions! Full text below.

Please consider a call for papers to an open access Special Issue of
*Sustainability* entitled* “Sustainability and Technological Trajectories
of Erosion”*.

Clearly, technologies are part and parcel of sustainability issues, both as
problem and as solution. When the role of technologies is studied, however,
the tendency is to focus on the emergence of new socio-technical
arrangements. Yet, what about the fate of old technologies that
threaten more sustainable modes of production and consumption? What about
the ‘trajectories of erosion, decay, and fossilisation’ as Elizabeth
Shove
and Gordon Walker coined the reverse dynamics.
This Special Issue comprises papers that describe, characterize and analyze
the phase-out, decline and failure of established technologies. In this
Special Issue we welcome theoretical, empirical and practical contributions
from STS, innovation studies, governance studies, transition
studies, history, management studies, and other relevant fields.

Please note that this Special Issue is open access, which means it will be
free for readers worldwide, but with an article processing charge paid by
authors and their organisations.

The deadline for submissions is August 31, 2019. We are looking forward to
reading your submissions!
