Final Reminder: CfP The Power of Correlation and the Promises of Auto-Management, EASST 2018
*Final Reminder - **Call for Abstracts/ Deadline 14^th February*

Dear Colleagues,

We kindly invite you again to submit abstracts for our panel at the
EASST 2018 conference in Lancaster, UK (25-28 July 2018).

https://nomadit.co.uk/easst/easst2018/conferencesuite.php/panels/6294

Kinds regards and sorry for crosspostings,

Gabriele Gramelsberger & Jutta Weber

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
/The Power of Correlation and the Promises of Auto-Management. /
/On The Epistemological and Societal Dimension of Data-Based Algorithms/

Gabriele Gramelsberger, RWTH Aachen
Jutta Weber, Universität Paderborn

Data-based learning algorithms do not only open up new dimensions of
knowledge production but shape increasingly more highly relevant
societal decision-making processes. Based on correlation-based search
heuristics, these algorithms are used to improve translation programs,
search engines, predictive policing strategies or so-called ‚adaptive‚
intelligent‘ protheses. They are highly relevant in realms ranging from
financing, administration and technoscience to law enforcement and
counter-insurgency. These algorithms do not only embody sociotechnical
practices of human and non-human actors but also transport invisible and
unquestioned values, norms and preferences.
In our panel, we want to analyze the epistemological and ontological
groundings of data-based learning algorithms – how, for example, they
are dependent on the provided / selected data material, on implemented
classifications, categorizations and problem-solving strategies. At the
same time, we want to reflect how the epistemologic logic of data-driven
algorithms and the increasing automation of decision-making corresponds
to our societal condition: We want to ask whether correlation does not
only feed into the datafication of our world but also serves a
contemporary sociocultural and biopolitical logic of risk management or
whether the increasing automation of decision-making reflects
post-democratic developments in the Global North.

Convenors: Gabriele Gramelsberger, RWTH Aachen; Jutta Weber, Paderborn
University

Deadline: February 14th, 2018

Please submit abstracts of max. 250 words here:
https://nomadit.co.uk/easst/easst2018/conferencesuite.php/panels/6294

Details about the conference: https://easst2018.easst.net/
Received: from mx-serv3.uni-due.de (mx-serv3.uni-duisburg-essen.de
[134.91.56.2]) by lists.uni-due.de (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id
w05CGfFX022465 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256
verify=FAIL) for
; Fri, 5
Jan 2018 13:16:42 +0100
Received: from localhost (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by
mx-serv3.uni-due.de (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6040E26085A for
; Fri, 5
Jan 2018 13:16:41 +0100 (MEZ)
X-Virus-Scanned: Clam Anti Virus - http://www.clamav.net
X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at uni-due.de
Authentication-Results: mx-serv3.uni-due.de (amavisd-new); dkim=pass
(1024-bit key) header.d=uni-paderborn.de
Received: from mx-serv3.uni-due.de ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost
(mx-serv3.uni-due.de [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP
id PoIu_CxqgHxU for
; Fri, 5
Jan 2018 13:16:40 +0100 (CET)
Received: from mail.uni-paderborn.de (mail.uni-paderborn.de
[131.234.142.9]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher
ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a
certificate) by mx-serv3.uni-due.de (Postfix) with ESMTPS for
; Fri, 5
Jan 2018 13:16:39 +0100 (MEZ)
DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; q=dns/txt; c=relaxed/relaxed;
d=uni-paderborn.de; s=20170601;
h=Content-Type:MIME-Version:Date:Message-ID:
Cc:Subject:From:To:Sender:Reply-To:Content-Transfer-Encoding:Content-ID:
Content-Description:Resent-Date:Resent-From:Resent-Sender:Resent-To:Resent-Cc
:Resent-Message-ID:In-Reply-To:References:List-Id:List-Help:List-Unsubscribe:
List-Subscribe:List-Post:List-Owner:List-Archive;
bh=/DsC6Vb9h0lZ1uBDvAjD6avxeXNJgtInFTnZmQQYvA8=;
b=jzY8pi+jRj+6TrPPtaiiTPiOc/
KjaD5DE9F8yd4UqSeqc8YIFI4bW2TgSMWpEAfRcQATmj+fu3mLASJ47J7BWSzmXEpq/6jvZ9KyZBl
wUIuhbaZx/R7P9MptHsRfldjBzmPcdyhF7PLSjy5ewVQl/WgIxf0j25HmDOGjN4l8LHI=;
To: WuT-Sektions-Verteiler

From: Jutta Weber
Subject: CfP The Power of Correlation and the Promises of
Auto-Management
Cc: Gramelsberger Gabriele
Message-ID:
Date: Fri, 5 Jan 2018 13:16:38 +0100
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:52.0) Gecko/20100101
Thunderbird/52.5.0
MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"
Content-Language: en-US
X-IMT-Spam-Score: 0.0 ()
X-PMX-Version: 6.4.1.2730818, Antispam-Engine: 2.7.2.2107409,
Antispam-Data: 2018.1.5.120616, AntiVirus-Engine: 5.46.0,
AntiVirus-Data: 2017.12.29.5460002
X-IMT-Authenticated-Sender: uid=juweber,ou=People,o=upb,c=de
X-Spam-Scanned: SpamAssassin: 3.002004 - http://www.spamassassin.org
X-Scanned-By: MIMEDefang 2.57 on 132.252.185.129
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative by demime 1.01d
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

Lieber Herr Schrape, würden Sie bitte den CfP weiterleiten?

Ein gutes neues Jahr!
