Recent History of Technology, Mediterranean Studies, Environmental Humanities: An Encounter Part of the ‘Tensions of Europe Digital Workshop Festival’, 28 June-2 July 2021

The workshop seeks to advance a fruitful conversation between recent history of technology and environmental humanities (especially environmental history) in reference to the Mediterranean, especially focusing on its southeastern region. This conversation seems especially important if we are to produce a proper contextualization of the way issues of relevance to the environmental/ecological crisis, climate change and sustainable development have been discussed and addressed regarding this region. Contributions on all kinds of energy-related technologies, from wind, solar and nuclear energy projects, to fossil fuel exploration, extraction and transport are especially welcome. And so are contributions on the full range of the history of the technology-environment intersection, from local air pollution to air dust arriving from a distance, and from recycling to garbage burning. The workshop aims at capitalizing on research undertaken through successfully completed (from NETWORKING EUROPE to HoNESt) and currently running (e.g., EURES, GREASE) ToE-related projects, bringing ongoing national research projects (e.g., the “Looking for Oil in the Greek Territory, 1920-1980” project on oil extractivism) in direct contact to this research and the ToE researchers responsible for it.
