The Danish Association for Science and Technology Studies 2020 conference will be held at Copenhagen Business School on May 14-15, 2020. The theme of the conference is “STS and the Future as a Matter of Collective Concern”. Deadline for submission of abstracts: Friday, February 28, 2020.
Conference Theme
STS and the Future as a Matter of Collective Concern.
Rising sea levels, mass extinctions, global displacements, climate catastrophe, everyday devices that conduct mass-surveillance, digitalization and automation of warfare, aggressively nationalistic politicians in important offices. We live in times when the future appears deeply concerning. It is in this context that we will dedicate the DASTS 2020 conference to a conversation about STS and the future as a matter of collective concern.
We especially welcome contributions that relate to the following topics:
· STS and the socio-technical construction of the future. We invite studies that explore how the future (and “time” more generally) is produced, experienced and lived today. For example, studies of multiple forms of constructing the future, analysis of temporal narratives in science and in science fiction, conceptual reflections about time and the Anthropocene, case studies of temporality in different socio-technical situations;
· STS and matters of concern. For several decades, STS research has paid attention to many of the issues that are at the core of today’s concern for the future. In line with this, we welcome empirical studies that explore socio-technical attempts to deal with, for example, climate catastrophe, automation, and algorithmic warfare;
· The future of STS. As STS is by tradition close to socio-technical concerns and the research we conduct has been and will continue to be visible and political, it increasingly opens difficult ethical, ideological and epistemological questions. We welcome papers that engage with the expanding repertoires and specific instruments that STS scholars use today: for example, comparisons and discussions concerning notions such as “matters of concern”, “care”, “intervention”, “collaboration”, “dialogical democracy”, “responsible innovation” and “the idiot”.
In line with the DASTS tradition, we invite contributions that relate to the conference theme. We also welcome papers that do not directly relate to the theme but are relevant to STS in other ways. We encourage papers in English to make the content accessible to a broad audience, but, as usual, papers in Danish will be accepted.

This year’s keynote speakers will be:
· (on May 14) Annelise Riles Professor of Law, Executive Director of the Roberta Buffet Institute of Global Studies, Northwestern University and Professor, School of Law, Department of Anthropology, Director of the Clarke Program in East Asian Law and Culture, Cornell University
· (on May 15) Maria Puig de la Bellacasa Associate Professor, Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies, University of Warwick.
In addition, we will have a “Futures Panel” discussing “Does STS (still) mean business?” with the following invited speakers:
· Joan Fujimura, Martindale-Bascom Professor, Department of Sociology, University of Wisconsin, Madison and President of the Society for the Social Studies of Science (2019-2021)
· Susi Geiger, Professor of Marketing and Market Studies at University College Dublin College of Business
· Alan Irwin, Professor of Risk and Organization, Department of Organization, Copenhagen Business School
· Lise Justesen, Associate Professor, Department of Organization, Copenhagen Business School
· Daniel Neyland, Professor in Sociology, Department of Sociology, Goldsmiths, University of London

Conference Fee
The conference fee is DKK 1000, DKK 500 for students (not PhD students), and DKK 500 for the conference dinner that will be held on Thursday, May 14.
