Seeking nominations for 4S Council and 6S

Please consider if this is something you’d like to nominate someone (could be yourself!) for any of these positions.
Best wishes,
Teun

Dear 4S Member:

4S will run its annual election in May, seeking to fill seats for four Council members and one 6S (Student Section) representative, all of whom will serve September 2019 through the annual meeting in 2022.

The deadline for nominations is April 1, 2019.

Nomination forms are available here:

http://www.4sonline.org/council_nom

http://www.4sonline.org/6s_nom

Please include a short (less than 500 words) rationale for the nomination. This will help the Council and Election Committee select a final slate. Self-nominations are welcome.

For more information on the term and duties of Council members see below and http://www.4sonline.org/governance

Terms and Responsibilities of 4S Council and 6S Representatives

4S Council members are elected by the membership in annual elections, serving a three-year term beginning immediately after the annual 4S meeting in the year they are elected. Four members (up from three before 2017) are elected annually from a slate of 5-7 candidates. Council members are expected to participate in approximately four meetings annually, with one face-to-face meeting at the annual meeting (generally on the day before the conference starts). Other meetings are virtual. Throughout the year, Council members serve on prize committees, standing committees and ad hoc committees, overseeing the core activities of the Society (its publishing program and website, for example). Standing and ad hoc committees produce reports that are discussed by Council and with 4S membership. Council members help sustain the regular activities of the Society and help envision new activities and directions.

All 4S members are eligible for nomination for a 4S Council seat. A final slate of candidates is selected by the Council’s Election Committee, which also runs the annual (spring) elections.

Elected representatives of 6S (the Student Section of the 4S) serve a three-year term beginning immediately after the annual 4S meeting in the year they are elected. One representative is elected annually from three candidates. Working together, (three) 6S representatives are responsible for maintaining open communication with graduate students and junior scholars in 4S, representing their interests and concerns to the 4S Council. 6S representatives are non-voting members of the 4S Council and are expected to participate in approximately four Council meetings a year, with one one face-to-face meeting at the annual meeting (generally on the day before the conference starts). Other meetings are virtual. 6S representatives also serve on prize committees (as voting members), standing committees (that oversee the Society’s website, for example, or maintain the Society’s social media presence), and on ad hoc committees charged to address problems, emerging issues and opportunities for new programming. Standing and ad hoc committees produce reports that are discussed by Council and with the 4S membership. 6S representatives help attune the Society to the special needs of graduate students and junior scholars while also helping plan the Society's future.

All 4S members who are graduate students (at the time of the election) are eligible for nomination for a 6S representative seat. A final slate of candidates is selected by the Council’s Election Committee, whose membership includes 6S representatives.

Many thanks,
Roopali Phadke, Chair, 4S Nominations Committee
