There is nothing as practical as a good theory. When theory meets practice.

Call for abstracts for the 3rd International Workshop on Socio-Gerontechnology — 19-20 June 2019, Stockholm

The Royal Institute of Technology, KTH, together with Mälardalen University have the pleasure to invite papers for an International Workshop exploring the intersection of Science and Technology Studies (STS) and Age Studies, to be held at The Royal Institute of Technology, KTH, on the 19th and 20th June 2019 in Stockholm.

After its previous meetings in Vienna 2017 and Barcelona 2018, this is the third workshop of the Socio- Gerontechnology network that explores and theorizes themes at the intersection of STS and Age Studies. The aims of the Stockholm meeting are to bring together scholars working in this area and related fields, discuss recent developments in the field, and further build the network. There will be ample room to discuss papers. Contributions of early-career scholars including PhD students are welcome.

Borrowing Kurt Lewin’s (1945) maxim – “there is nothing as practical as a good theory” – we invite to reflect upon the connection between theory and practice when STS and Age Studies meet. What happens if scholars at the cross-roads of STS and Age Studies engage with design processes? What is the contribution that critical studies of ageing and technology, can make in relation to innovation policy discourses? Can we create more reflective approaches towards technology design and policy by providing empirically-grounded insights into the mutual shaping of ageing and technology?

By posing these questions, we invite papers that explore themes at the intersection of STS, Age Studies and Practice. While this may include studies of specific design processes or methods, and how they relate to ageing and later life, we welcome all contributions that critically reflect, in a broad sense, upon the implications of science and technology for the lives of older people. Relying on this rich variety of contributions from STS and Age Studies, the workshop strives to foster a reflection on how our research contributes knowledge to the relationship between aging populations as one of the main social changes of our time and technological change and digitization.

We invite scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds to elaborate on this connection, how it can be theorized and which are the practical implications of theories and insights at the intersection of STS and Age Studies. Themes may include, but are not limited, to any of the following:
• Critical theories of and approaches to ageing and technology
• Design approaches for, with and by older people
• Ageing, technology and social policy
• (Applied) methods to study ageing and technology
• Reflections on design as constituting ageing and later life
• Ageing, everyday culture and technology
• Design ethics in Gerontechnology
• Gender, ageing and technologies
